PHOENIX, Ariz. (September 22, 2025) – On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, Phoenix Art Museum will debut Alden, a 3,862-square-foot New American restaurant that merges culinary creativity with architectural history. Named for Alden B. Dow, the visionary behind the Museum’s original 1959 building, the restaurant was created in partnership with CS Hospitality, a new hospitality group founded by the team behind Conceptually Social together with Operating Partner Monica X. Castillo

“We are thrilled to officially announce the opening date for Alden at Phoenix Art Museum,” said Jeremy Mikolajczak, the Museum’s Sybil Harrington Director and CEO. “Inspired by the visionary spirit of the Museum’s architect, Alden B. Dow, this new restaurant invites guests to savor an artful culinary experience that echoes the creativity and innovation found throughout our campus. Beginning this October, we encourage everyone to make reservations and enjoy a day at the Museum. Explore this season’s extraordinary exhibitions, discover unique finds at The Museum Store, and now, complete your visit with a memorable meal at Alden, presented in partnership with CS Hospitality.”

Situated in Downtown Phoenix at the heart of Phoenix Art Museum and overlooking the Museum’s lush Dorrance Sculpture Garden, Alden offers guests a refined yet welcoming atmosphere where food, art, and community meet. Beginning October 1, the restaurant will be open for indoor dining Wednesday through Friday from 10 am to 9 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 8 pm (closed Mondays and Tuesdays), serving as a destination for leisurely lunches and sumptuous dinners. Museum visitors can also enjoy a convenient grab-and-go selection with outdoor seating on Grossman Terrace in the Sculpture Garden, with full outdoor dining service launching this November in time for the holiday season.

Alden’s menu reflects a modern American sensibility elevated by global influences and seasonal ingredients. Shareables include a range of vibrant, flavor-forward starters, such as a delicate hamachi crudo. Salads range from a crisp seasonal fattoush to hearty greens. Sandwiches like the chicken katsu bun and indulgent patty melt balance comfort with culinary flair, while entrées such as a silky squash risotto or classic steak frites bring depth and richness. A whimsical strawberry trifle—a playful riff on Alden B. Dow’s favorite strawberry shortcake dessert—anchors the dessert menu. Guests will also enjoy a full kids’ menu and a beverage program featuring crafted house and zero-proof cocktails.

For CS Hospitality, the team behind Kaizen Sushi, Conceptually Social Catering, and Silo Tempe, Alden marks a new chapter in crafting hospitality experiences that celebrate design and community. Operating Partner Monica X. Castillo, whose career spans Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, La Grande Orange Pizzeria, Chelsea’s Kitchen, Parlor Pizzeria, Upward Projects, and Happiness Plaza Concepts in Wichita, Kan., has long been known for shaping menus that balance comfort and creativity.

“Dining at Alden is about the connection between flavors, people, and art,” said Castillo. “It will be a space where guests can relax, take in the beauty of the Museum, and enjoy a meal that feels both special and approachable.”

Colin Pearson named Curator of Asian Art; Dr. JoAnna Reyes named Adjunct Curator for Art of the Americas

PHOENIX (July 2, 2025) – Phoenix Art Museum (PhxArt) announces the appointment of two new curators: Colin Pearson as the institution’s Curator for Asian Art and Dr. JoAnna Reyes as its new Adjunct Curator for Art of the Americas. Reyes’ role is a collaborative appointment between Phoenix Art Museum and the School of Art in Arizona State University’s (ASU) Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. In their respective roles, Pearson will develop exhibitions that draw from and highlight the Museum’s expansive Asian art collection, and Reyes will curate exhibitions across the Museum’s American, Western American, Latin American, and Spanish Colonial art collections. Both Pearson and Reyes assume their roles effective immediately.

“We are thrilled to welcome Colin Pearson and JoAnna Reyes to the outstanding curatorial team at Phoenix Art Museum,” said Jeremy Mikolajczak, the Museum’s Sybil Harrington Director and CEO. “Both Colin and JoAnna have deep expertise and significant experience within their respective fields and bring fresh, innovative perspectives to the presentation of the PhxArt Collection’s rich holdings. We are excited to see how their exhibitions engage and educate our audiences in new ways, reaffirming the Museum’s role as a space of belonging that reflects the breadth of experiences represented across our community.”

“I am both excited and humbled to be appointed as Phoenix Art Museum’s third curator of Asian art, and I look forward to sharing this incredibly rich collection with audiences in a variety of new ways,” said Pearson. “I feel passionately that the physical distance between Arizona and the places where these wonderful artworks originate does not need to be a barrier to the appreciation of their beauty. By approaching the collection with an open mind, I seek to help audiences discover what makes the artistic traditions of Asia distinct, highlight the intercultural exchanges that have always connected us, and make Asian art accessible and relevant for the diverse and family-oriented audiences here in the Valley of the Sun.”

“I am excited to join the curatorial team at Phoenix Art Museum and explore the Museum’s incredible collection of art from across the Americas,” said Reyes. “By taking a hemispheric approach, I hope to create exhibitions that highlight the migrations, exchanges, and shared stories that have shaped the region, with the goal of sparking new conversations and understanding of the art of the Americas.”

About Colin Pearson

Colin Pearson assumes his new role as PhxArt’s Curator of Asian Art, bringing over a decade of experience curating collections of Asian artworks, ceramics, craft items, musical instruments, and ethnographic artifacts, with expertise on the effects of maritime and Silk Road trade routes on the arts of Tibet, China, and India. He previously served as the Museum’s adjunct curator of Asian art since 2024, overseeing the refresh of the Art of Asia galleries and curating exhibitions such as Chardi Kala: Rising Above Adversity, a presentation of Sikh artworks exploring the concept of unwavering optimism in the face of hardship. This year, Pearson will serve as coordinating curator for the Museum’s presentation of Radical Clay: Contemporary Women Artists from Japan, organized by the Art Institute of Chicago, and lead curator for the exhibition Flowers of the Punjab: Textiles of India and Beyond, both opening in September 2025.

In addition to his work at PhxArt, Pearson has collaborated on curatorial projects at Arizona State University (ASU) and catalogued a collection of nearly 200 textiles, artworks, and ethnographic objects for ASU’s Center for Asian Research. From 2020 to 2022, Pearson served as a curator for the Zayed National Museum in the United Arab Emirates, cultivating and sharing his extensive knowledge of ceramics and other export goods traded along overland and maritime routes from China, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and India. As a curator at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix from 2009 to 2020, Pearson organized special exhibitions of custom-inlaid guitars and Chinese antiquities. He also expanded the institution’s collection of instruments and artifacts from Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East, as well as instruments from Europe and North America.

Pearson has delivered public talks and lectures on a wide range of topics relating to Asian art, including the musical and artistic cultures of Asia, connoisseurship and classification schemes, and the global legacies of cultural interactions throughout history. He earned his Bachelor of Music at California State University, Long Beach and his Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology from the University of California at Riverside. He is currently working toward his PhD in Asian Art History at Arizona State University.

About Dr. JoAnna Reyes

Dr. JoAnna Reyes’s collaborative appointment as the Adjunct Curator for Art of the Americas at Phoenix Art Museum and Assistant Professor of Art History and Museum Studies at Arizona State University (ASU) further deepens the collaboration between the leading art museum in the Southwest and one of the largest comprehensive arts programs at a public research university in the U.S. In her new role at PhxArt, Reyes will curate exhibitions across the Museum’s American, Western American, Latin American, and Spanish Colonial art collections, expanding opportunities for audiences to consider connections across borders, time periods, and cultures.

Reyes’ first curatorial project at the Museum will be a collection installation in the institution’s newly renovated Art of the Americas and Europe galleries, which are re-opening in November 2025. Drawing from the Museum’s Spanish Colonial and Latin American art collections, Reyes will highlight the traditions and innovations in the viceregal art of Latin America, and how artists of the period drew inspiration from Asian art objects and prints from Northern Europe to create innovative, sophisticated, and nuanced works imbued with traditional Indigenous techniques, Catholic devotional imagery, and new iconographies invented to honor local saints and miracles. The installation will also showcase contemporary works that exemplify how Latin American artists today reference this period in their practices.

In addition to her curatorial work, this fall Reyes will teach an ASU art history seminar, located in the Museum’s Education building. Reyes will use the PhxArt collection and new North Wing collection galleries to focus on a period between the 15th and 16thcenturies often referred to as the Age of Discovery, when Europeans developed a growing fascination with collecting a wide array of antiquities, natural specimens, books, prints, drawings, paintings, and other projects, largely influenced by the exploration and colonization of the Americas. Students will examine the practices and theoretical frameworks that informed early modern collecting and how they evolved into contemporary museological contexts, particularly around topics of repatriation, restitution, and deaccessioning.

A specialist in the visual and material culture of viceregal Latin American and contemporary Chicana/o America, Reyes explores identity, art patronage, and how images and symbols, particularly from border regions, shape our understanding of place and culture. She developed the 2025 exhibition Agua es Vida at the Rio Salado Audubon Center and Samouraï: Armure du Guerrier (2011) at the musée du Quai Branly with the Barbier-Mueller Museum (Dallas), published an entry in Archive of the World: Art and Imagination in Spanish America, 1500-1800 (Delmonico, 2022), and co-authored an article in Feminist Formations (John Hopkins University Press, 2022), among other ongoing writing and book projects.

Reyes, who earned her PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles, worked at the Getty Research Institute and served as the curatorial assistant at LACMA (2013-2015) and Mellon Fellow (2016-2017). Previously, she worked at the Hispanic Society Museum and Library (NY) and the Barbier-Mueller Museum, and from 2016-2019, she served as the book review editor for Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies.

Juan Francisco Elso: Por América
On view through September 17, 2023
Juan Francisco Elso: Por América explores the significant career of the late Cuban artist, whose sculptures and installations examine the complexities of contemporary Cuban, Caribbean, and Latin American identities. Fashioned from natural, organic materials, featured works draw influence from Indigenous traditions, Afro-Caribbean religious beliefs, and the traumas of colonial oppression and are placed in conversation with paintings, sculptures and more by a group of 30 multigenerational artists active in the Caribbean and throughout North, South, and Central America. Through this contextual approach, the traveling survey illuminates Elso’s legacy and articulates a more expansive idea of the Americas, free of geopolitical borders and boundaries.

Juan Francisco Elso: Por América is organized by El Museo del Barrio and guest curated by Olga Viso, curator-at-large at Phoenix Art Museum and senior advisor at Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, in collaboration with Susanna V.
Christian Ramírez will drive initiatives to advance local and regional art as the Museum’s new assistant curator of contemporary and community art initiatives

PHOENIX (October 25, 2022) – Phoenix Art Museum has selected Christian Ramírez to serve as the Museum’s inaugural assistant curator of contemporary and community art initiatives. Ramírez will officially begin in the role on November 28, 2022.

“We are thrilled to welcome Christian Ramírez to the curatorial team at Phoenix Art Museum,” said Jeremy Mikolajczak, the Museum’s Sybil Harrington Director and CEO. “As our assistant curator of contemporary and community art initiatives—the first curatorial role in the Museum’s history dedicated exclusively to artists working in Arizona today—Christian will create dynamic and meaningful exhibitions and public programs that transform the Museum’s role in elevating the work of our regional artists. With her knowledge, creativity, and passion for working with emerging and established artists, we are confident Christian will help us achieve our vision of a community-first Phoenix Art Museum that plays a pivotal role in strengthening the art ecosystem of the Southwest.”

As the Museum’s assistant curator of contemporary and community art initiatives, Ramírez will develop and lead a comprehensive institutional program designed to advance local, regional, and community art initiatives and foster appreciation for art of the 21st century. Her portfolio of responsibilities includes the creation of exhibitions, installations, public programs, and incubation programs that elevate Arizona-based artists and their work locally and nationally. She will also oversee the Arlene and Morton Scult Artist Award program, the Sally and Richard Lehmann Emerging Artist Award program, the Eric Fischl Lecture Series (presented in collaboration with Phoenix College), and the annual Dawn and David Lenhardt Lecture series. Ramírez will additionally be responsible for growing the presence of Arizona-based artists in the Museum’s exhibitions and collection, with a specific focus on works by artists historically excluded from museum collections in the United States.

Ramírez comes to Phoenix Art Museum from Artpace in San Antonio, Texas, where she served as the artist-residency and exhibition manager. From 2018–2021, she served as the public-programs manager and, later, the interim head of education and engagement at Phoenix Art Museum. At PhxArt, she programmed a series of sold-out lectures to complement the special-engagement exhibition Teotihuacan: City of Water, City of Fire. The series included the Museum’s first Spanish-language lecture in its 63-year history. Over the past decade, Ramírez has also curated exhibitions in Phoenix, Chicago, and Tucson through Everybody, a curatorial and gallery project she co-founded in 2016.

“I am very excited to have been selected as the assistant curator of contemporary and community art initiatives at Phoenix Art Museum,” said Ramírez. “I’m thrilled at the opportunity to collaborate with, support, and strengthen ties to Arizona and Southwest artists, building upon the foundation created by the Museum over its history, particularly through curatorial initiatives, arts-engagement programming, and education efforts.”

Ramírez is the newest addition to the Museum’s curatorial team, which is composed of Helen Jean, the Jacquie Dorrance Curator of Fashion Design; Janet Baker, PhD, curator of Asian art; Betsy Fahlman, PhD, adjunct curator of American art; and Rebecca A. Senf, PhD, the interim Norton Family Curator of Photography. The Museum will commence a search in the coming months to replace Gilbert Vicario, the former curator of modern and contemporary art, who concluded his service at the Museum earlier this month following his appointment as the chief curator of Pérez Art Museum Miami.
For more information, contact the Museum’s Communications Office at samantha.andreacchi@phxart.org or 602.257.2105.

Antonio: The Fine Art of Fashion Illustration features artistic, editorial, and commercial work by the renowned fashion illustrator and his creative partner, including 12 drawings on view for the first time to the general public.

PHOENIX (August, 19 2019) – From September 21, 2019 through January 5, 2020, Phoenix
Art Museum will present Antonio:
The Fine Art of Fashion Illustration, a three-decade
survey of works by renowned fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez and art director Juan
Ramos. Spanning the 1960s through the 1980s, the exhibition showcases more than
100 original drawings, photographs, and magazines featuring work that Lopez and
Ramos created under ANTONIO, the signature representing the Puerto Rican duo’s
collaborative creations. Antonio
explores how Lopez and Ramos brought a fresh perspective to an industry that
was quickly prioritizing photography over illustration, and how their vibrant
designs expanded and transformed fashion’s view of beauty, ethnicity, and
sexuality.

“We
are excited to present Antonio: The Fine
Art of Fashion Illustration to our audiences in Arizona,” said Gilbert
Vicario,
the Museum’s Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs and the Selig Family
Chief Curator. “Through their unique aesthetic and diverse body of work,
Antonio Lopez and Juan Ramos redefined the fashion illustration industry, and
we are proud to pay homage to their contributions through this exhibition at
Phoenix Art Museum.”

Born
in 1943 in Utuado, Puerto Rico, Lopez and his family moved to New York when he
was 7. He attended the Traphagen School of Fashion and the High School of Art
and Design (formerly High School of Industrial Arts) before being accepted to
the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). Through a work-study program at FIT,
Lopez was offered a job at Women’s Wear
Daily. He accepted the position with the fashion trade paper and left FIT
before graduating. Lopez would go on to illustrate for the world’s preeminent
fashion publications and retailers before moving to Paris in the 1970s, where
he worked with Karl Lagerfield and Yves Saint Laurent, among other significant
designers. He moved back to New York in the 1980s, during which time his work
was heavily influenced by athletic wear and street and break-dancing style.
Throughout his career, he also discovered some of fashion’s most successful
models, including Pat Cleveland, Tina Chow, Jerry Hall, Grace Jones, and
Jessica Lange. He championed these diverse women, and through his illustrations, he
re-envisioned what fashion illustration was and could be.

Lopez’s
work was heavily influenced by his creative partner Juan Ramos, who he met at
FIT. A fellow New-York transplant from Puerto Rico, Ramos brought significant
knowledge of pop culture and art and fashion history to Lopez’s drawings. Antonio: The Fine Art of Fashion
Illustration showcases the work the collaborators produced for publications
and retailers such as Vogue, The New York Times Magazine, French Elle, Harper’s Bazaar Italia, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdales. Additionally,
more than 20 lavish drawings from Lopez’s Tales from the Thousand and One Nights,
an illustrated book of stories from The
Arabian Nights, are also featured, alongside 12 never-before-exhibited,
large-scale drawings from 1973 that feature models Pat Cleveland and Amina
Warsuma and were commissioned by former Vogue
editor Carrie Donovan. Antonio also
includes a continuous screening of the documentary Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex, Fashion and Disco (2017) by director James
Crump. The film explores the impact of Lopez and Ramos on the fashion industry.

“Antonio’s
work has inspired me for decades,” said Dennita Sewell, the exhibition’s
curator who served as the Museum’s Jacquie Dorrance Curator of Fashion Design from
2000 to August 2019. “Antonio added a sensuality to his illustrations that
wasn’t allowed to be explored in the cultural climate until the 1960s and
1970s. His work was about more than just making an image. He styled and
fostered unique identities for the women he drew, and he was at the forefront
of the movement toward diversity and inclusion in the fashion image.”

For
interviews and high-resolution photography, contact the Museum’s Press Office
at 602.257.2015 or margaree.bigler@phxart.org. For more information about Phoenix Art Museum and its

Ruben Alvarez, Maria Harper-Marinick, and Donald Opatrny join the Museum’s 35-member board in 2018–2019 fiscal year

PHOENIX
(January 16, 2019) –Phoenix Art Museum announces the appointment
of three community leaders to the Museum’s Board of Trustees: Ruben Alvarez, co-founder
and managing partner, Molera Alvarez; Maria Harper-Marinick, PhD, chancellor, Maricopa
County Community College District; and Donald Opatrny, former partner and
managing director, Goldman Sachs. The new appointees join the additional 35
members of the Board of Trustees, which serves as the Museum’s governing body
and plays a key role in setting strategic goals and ensuring fiduciary
responsibility in collaboration with Amada Cruz, the Museum’s Sybil Harrington
Director and CEO. The appointments of Alvarez, Harper-Marinick, and Opatrny support
the Museum’s strategic priority to leverage the professional leadership
experience of its board through the recruitment of corporate and community
leaders and aligns with its continued initiative to ensure the Museum’s board,
staff, and collections reflect the diversity of its surrounding community. Alvarez
and Harper-Marinick were elected to the Board, effective December 20, 2018;
Opatrny was elected to the Board, effective October 25, 2018.

“We are privileged to welcome Ruben
Alvarez, Maria Harper-Marinick, and Donald Opatrny to the Board of Trustees of
Phoenix Art Museum,” said Cruz. “Each of our new Trustees brings with them a
diversity of experiences in finance, law, government, higher education, and
non-profit leadership, and they will play an integral role in guiding the
Museum as we celebrate the milestone of our 60th year and prepare for future
success. In addition to their professional expertise, each shares the same
passion as our current board members and staff—to increase access to the arts
and arts education for people of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in
our city, state, and region.”

As the Museum celebrates its 60th
anniversary in November 2019, the milestone offers a period of reflection and
planning for the next decade to come. Since transitioning to its first chief
executive officer following the retirement of museum director James K.
Ballinger after more than three decades of leadership, the Museum has continued
to collaborate with its Trustees and staff to professionalize internal
processes and expand long-range strategic and financial planning. This focus
has informed the recruitment and selection of the three new Trustees. Donald
Opatrny, retired managing director of Goldman Sachs, brings a wealth of
insights from the financial sector. Through their expertise in governmental
relations, non-profit leadership, and higher education, Ruben Alvarez, co-founder
and managing partner of Molera Alvarez, a Valley business development and
consulting firm specializing in lobbying and governmental advocacy; and Maria
Harper-Marinick, PhD, the first woman to serve as chancellor of the Maricopa County
Community College District, bring an added dimension to board leadership in
these key areas that will help shape the future of the Museum.

Along with their professional
experiences, Alvarez and Harper-Marinick bring shared experience as advocates
and leaders within Arizona’s Latino community. Along with his extensive work
locally, Alvarez currently serves as treasurer on the national board of the
Latino Leaders Network, based in Washington, DC. Along with her community
advocacy, Harper-Marinick helms the Maricopa County Community College District,
designated a Hispanic-Serving System/District with six of 10 colleges designated
as Hispanic-Serving Institutions, defined by Title-V as districts and colleges
that serve student bodies whose total enrollment is at least 25% Latino. Their
membership on the board aligns with the Museum’s ongoing commitment to ensuring
the diversity of its staff, board, collections, and exhibition programming.

“Through Amada’s leadership, we have
seen a tremendous increase in the diversity of the Museum’s staff and executive
leadership, as well as in the types of exhibitions and programs the Museum
offers to deepen engagement with people in our communities of all backgrounds
and identities,” said Jon Hulburd, chair of the Board of Trustees of Phoenix
Art Museum. “But it was important to Amada, my fellow Trustees, and myself to
ensure the makeup of our Board of Trustees also reflects the diversity of our
community, with dimensional voices that will help guide us in our decision-making
as we continue to become a museum for all people. The appointment of leaders
such as Ruben and Maria is a step forward in realizing those goals, especially
as representative leaders of more than 2 million Latinos in our state. We look
to continue recruiting and appointing new leaders who will amplify the voices
of underrepresented individuals and populations within our community, and by
doing so, make us stronger.”

With Alvarez, Harper-Marinick, and Opatrny, the Museum’s
Board of Trustees now consists of 38 members, who represent the top tier of
civic and business leadership in the Valley. Board members may serve a maximum
of three 3-year terms before rolling off the board for one year, as stated in
the Museum’s governing bylaws. For more information about Phoenix Art Museum
and its Board of Trustees, contact the Marketing and Communications Office of
Phoenix Art Museum at 602.257.2105 or margaree.bigler@phxart.org.

About Ruben E. Alvarez

Ruben E. Alvarez is co-founder and
managing partner at Molera Alvarez. Applying his extensive political experience
and strategic business expertise, he has led a wide range of Fortune 500
companies, non-profit groups, and governmental entities in pursuit of their
business development and legislative goals. Prior to forming Molera Alvarez in
2003, Alvarez worked in the State of Arizona’s Executive branch for 12 years.
Notable is his role as the Governor’s Policy Advisor for Mexico and Hispanic
Affairs. In this role, he managed the state’s relationship with Mexican
federal, state, and local government officials and provided leadership
direction on key bi-national issues, cross-border trade activities, and
initiatives targeting the needs of the Hispanic community.

In addition, before becoming policy advisor,
Alvarez served as the Governor’s Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity,
where he was responsible for implementing and overseeing outreach efforts to
develop greater communication links between state agencies and underrepresented

The
Museum will stagger closures of some galleries and event spaces to allow vital
system updates

PHOENIX (May 31, 2018) – During 2018 and 2019, Phoenix Art Museum will work in
collaboration with the City of Phoenix to execute a series of renovations to
the Museum’s emergency fire sprinkler systems. In light of the flood damage
suffered by Burton Barr Library in 2017 due to malfunctioning systems, the City
has prioritized the undertaking of sweeping efforts to ensure that major public
and private institutions city-wide maintain up-to-date emergency technologies.
Closures of Museum spaces to accommodate the renovations will take place on a
staggered schedule over approximately 12 months, allowing the Museum to keep a
maximum number of gallery spaces open at all times and ensure a positive and
enriching guest experience.
