Discount Tire Free Family Weekend participants explored angles in relation to the landscape with Phoenix-based artist Laura Spalding Best. Currently on view in the 2017 Contemporary Forum Artists’ Grants Recipients exhibition, Best’s paintings on found objects depict mirages on the horizon of desert highways in the southwest. These phenomena of light and temperature appear as reflections that resemble water on the road surface. Free Family Weekend participants created their own reflections of objects found throughout the local urban landscape, which Best combined to create the murals on view in this gallery.

Reflecting the Landscape is organized by Phoenix Art Museum. The installation will be on view through August 1 in the Wolfswinkel Education Center Children’s Gallery. It is made possible through the generosity of Discount Tire.

January 22 – February 26, 2018

Discount Tire Free Family Weekend participants investigated the concept of scale with Phoenix-based artists Roy Wasson Valle and Koryn Woodward Wasson. Known for creating immersive, learning spaces using a variety of media, the artists drew inspiration from Phoenix Art Museum’s Thorne Miniature Rooms. Intrigued by the rooms’ rich history, meticulous detail, and exacting scale of 12:1, Wasson and Woodward’s mural depicts objects with the opposite scale of 1:12. Incorporated throughout the installation are photographs of miniature rooms constructed by Free Family Weekend participants. Using repurposed materials, their newly practiced measurement skills and creative problem solving are on full display.

Standard Size is organized by Phoenix Art Museum. The installation will be on view through February 26 in the Wolfswinkel Education Center Children’s Gallery. It is made possible through the generosity of donors to the Museum’s annual fund.
