PHOENIX (September 15, 2023) – Phoenix Art Museum has announced it will host the second annual FashFilmFete™, a premier film festival exploring the history and future of fashion storytelling through a curated selection of Hollywood, indie, experimental, and documentary films that showcase the significance of fashion in filmmaking. FashFilmFete will take place at the Museum on Saturday, September 23 from 11 am – 5 pm and virtually from September 24 through October 8 (virtual tickets sold separately).

Happy Clothes: A Film About Patricia Field
Carrie Bradshaw’s tutu. Miranda Priestly’s hair. Betty Suarez’s red-framed glasses. Even if you haven’t heard of Patricia Field, there is no doubt you’re deeply familiar with her legendary designs. Happy Clothes: A Film About Patricia Field takes a deep dive into the storied life of this iconic costume designer. Take a walk down memory lane with Field and her endless list of friends, team members, and collaborators to see how some of the most memorable film and television costumes came to life. A Q&A with director Michael Selditch will follow the screening.

Diamond Minds
The Mōs goes behind the scenes of New York Fashion Week fall 2021 to uncover all the work it takes to put on a fashion show from the perspective of architect-turned fashion designer Winston B. Holder III. This series is a follow-up to the provocative documentary Bartholomew’s Gold, which won 2nd Place Best Documentary at the 2022 FashFilmFete.

A panel discussion with co-producers Maurice Porcher, Karim Staine, and more following the screening.

Desert Rider

Desert Rider explores the relationships between transportation, industry, landscape, and identity in our desert region. With a diverse display of large-scale installations, prints, sculptures, and more, the major exhibition illuminates the influence of lowrider and custom-car culture on contemporary artists working in the Southwest today, including Cara Romero, Margarita Cabrera, Justin Favela, Liz Cohen, and Douglas Miles, who examine themes of masculinity and femininity, migration and mobility, queer identity, and more.

Desert Rider is organized by Phoenix Art Museum. It is made possible through the generosity of the Arizona Office of Tourism and Men’s Arts Council, with additional support from the Museum’s Circles of Support and Museum Members.

FASHFILMFETE™ Fashion Film Festival

FASHFILMFETE™ (FFF) will present a curated selection of popular, indie, experimental, and documentary films to showcase the significance of fashion in filmmaking. The all-day event will feature 21 films from independent filmmakers, including the Hollywood cult classic Mahogany (1975), starring the iconic Diana Ross. FFF will bring together a global community of fashion and film aficionados to explore style in cinema and its influence on pop culture, fashion design, contemporary art, and beauty standards. First Friday: Desert Rider

On May 6, Phoenix Art Museum will host a Desert Rider-themed First Friday with various in-person programming, including:

• A display of lowriders parked outside of the Museum
• A performance by Sam Frésquez (@samfresquez)
• Live airbrushing by Kevin Aviles (@kevinavilespena)
• An art installation by Antonio Salazar (@santosincara)
• An interactive workshop with Joshua Castañeda (@castanedajoshua)
• Live music by DJ AwDre (@aw.dre), DJ Cervantes (@crvnt3sphx), and Las Calakas (@lascalakas)

Visitors will also enjoy a selection of food vendors and a cash bar.

Free Admission to Desert Rider with Donation on First Friday
PhxArt is proud to collaborate with The Justa Center for First Friday in May 2022. On May 6, all visitors who attend the Desert Rider-themed evening and donate an item to help serve the growing number of seniors experiencing homelessness in Phoenix will receive complimentary admission to the newest major exhibition. Requested donated items include retail-sized bottles of SPF 50+ sunscreen and canned food, including beans, meat, vegetables, and fruit. Visitors should bring their donations to the Museum on the night of First Friday to receive complimentary admission Desert Rider.

Make It! Sketching in the Garden with Artist Jessica Palomo

For this Make It! workshop, guests will explore and gather inspiration from the textures, shapes, and cropping techniques in Jessica Palomo’s graphite drawing Strelitzia featured in Breaking Up to create their own organic nature drawing to take home. Visitors to PhxArt will enjoy live performances in the galleries by Movement Source Dance Company. Founded in 1988, Movement Source is a nonprofit, multimedia modern dance company whose mission is to expand the audience for dance in Arizona by creating accessible dance performances, education programs, and events. Storytime in the Garden

Designed for our youngest PhxArt visitors (ages 0-5) and their parents or caregivers, storytime in the Dorrance Sculpture Garden is a wonderful opportunity to share the joy of early literacy, art-inspired play, and hands-on learning with family and friends. Attendees must bring their own blankets.

The Storytime in the Garden series will be offered on the first Wednesday of each month. Tickets are available for reservation here.

Whimsical paper dresses of the 1960s enjoyed only a short lifespan, but more than a fad, these bright, colorful garments were a testing ground and marketing tool showcasing the latest in paper and disposable-material technology. Weekly Virtual Mindfulness Sessions

Scientific studies show the art of mindfulness can relieve anxiety, depression, pain, and stress and actually change the way we feel, think, work, and play by opening new pathways in the brain. Presented in collaboration with Hospice of the Valley, this free, 30-minute, at-home mindfulness session promotes living in the present. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and as in-person, on-site tours for schools remain suspended until further notice, Phoenix Art Museum now offers live PhxArt Virtual Classroom Visits. The Museum also offers PhxArt Virtual Presentations for Adults to bring art-engagement opportunities to the community.

PhxArt Virtual Classroom Visits
Led by Museum Docents, the institution’s corps of volunteer educators, PhxArt Virtual Classroom Visits engage students with various art-related topics that complement classroom curriculum. These live, virtual art presentations can be presented on a range of video platforms for a fee of $25 per presentation, with free or reduced-cost PhxArt Virtual Classroom Visits available for Title-I schools. PhxArt Virtual Presentations for Adults
PhxArt Virtual Presentations for Adults are available for both community-serving institutions and private groups of 10 adults or more. Led by Museum Docents, these live, image-based presentations explore various themes related to the Museum’s collection of more than 20,000 artworks from around the world, creating opportunities for meaningful peer interaction and engagement. PHXARTIST SPOTLIGHTS
Presented by Phoenix Art Museum, PhxArtist Spotlight is a monthly series that explores what inspires and motivates Valley creatives, while leveraging the Museum’s reach in its community to support and expand awareness of working artists. Each month, the Museum highlights a different artist working in Arizona, posting a Q&A with the artist and images of their work on the Museum’s Instagram and Facebook channels and on the Museum’s bilingual blog.
