PhxArt AfterHours returns, activated by free general admission, live music, art-making workshops, and specialty food and drink experiences inspired by exhibition Laura Aguilar: Nudes in Nature. Programming includes:

• Captivating collage workshop with artist Ayling Dominguez exploring themes of intergenerational healing and archival resistance (@rhymeswithmean)
• Engage in self-expression through blackout poetry, followed by an open mic session to share creations

Lenhardt Lecture: Lily Stockman

Join contemporary artist Lily Stockman for the spring Lenhardt Lecture. Based in Los Angeles and Yucca Valley, California, Stockman draws from nature and its grammar of symmetry, camouflage, and repetition to create large-scale abstract paintings. Stockman plumbs her familiar landscapes (Los Angeles, the Mojave Desert, a remote island in Maine) for her distinctive palette of glowing, tertiary colors– crackling orange, red earth, Holbein brown, and Fra Angelico blue. The New Yorker art critic Johanna Fateman describes the artist’s biomorphic compositions as “both diagrammatic and vaporous, a combination that calls to mind the spiritualist abstractions of the American modernist Agnes Pelton. Although they’re more lyrical, Stockman’s nested shapes also have the meticulous magic of Josef Albers’s squares.” Tickets are available for reservation here.

Art Talk: Gina Siciliano on Italian Baroque Painter Artemesia Gentileschi
A Collaboration between PhxArt and FOCUS on European Art

Presented in Whiteman Hall. Limited capacity.
Join us as artist, musician, and historian Gina Siciliano tells the story of Artemisia Gentileschi, Italy’s most famous woman painter of the 17th century. Siciliano will discuss Gentileschi’s paintings within the context of their time and place, illuminating ongoing controversies and exciting new discoveries. A book signing will follow the lecture at The Museum Store. Tickets are available for reservation here.

Barbie®: A Cultural Icon
Through July 7, 2024
Created by Illusion Projects and curated by costume historian Karan Feder, in collaboration with Mattel, Inc., Barbie®: A Cultural Icon examines the Barbie brand’s 65+ year history and the doll’s global impact on pop culture and fashion through more than 250 vintage dolls, various historical objects, video interviews, and a life-size Barbie Mirror-Pink Corvette.

Barbie®: A Cultural Icon was created by Illusion Projects and curated by costume historian Karan Feder, in collaboration with Mattel. The exhibition’s presentation at Phoenix Art Museum is coordinated by Helen Jean, the Jacquie Dorrance Curator of Fashion Design. The Phoenix premiere of Barbie®: A Cultural Icon is made possible through the generosity of The Opatrny Family Foundation, Arizona Costume Institute, Desert Financial Credit Union, Men’s Arts Council, My Sister’s Closet, Shamrock Farms, and Miriam and Yefim Sukhman. All exhibitions at Phoenix Art Museum are underwritten by the Phoenix Art Museum Exhibition Excellence Fund, founded by The Opatrny Family Foundation with additional major support provided by Joan Cremin.

The Power of Pink

Drawn exclusively from the PhxArt fashion-design collection, The Power of Pink complements major exhibition Barbie®: A Cultural Icon, exploring the history, science, and associations of the color synonymous with the iconic Barbie brand.

The Power of Pink is organized by Phoenix Art Museum and curated by Helen Jean, the Jacquie Dorrance Curator of Fashion Design at Phoenix Art Museum.  The Power of Pink is made possible by the generosity of Arizona Costume Institute, My Sister’s Closet, and the Kelly Ellman Fashion Design Endowment Fund.
