ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Mountains and Rivers, Flowers and Birds: Gifts from the Papp Family Collection explores how classical Chinese ink paintings sought to reflect and show reverence to the beauty of the natural world. Traditionally, Chinese painting focused on the monumental format of mountains, trees, rocks, and clouds, or the intimate format of birds, flowers, insects, and fruit. This special installation’s hanging and horizontal scrolls, albums, and fans depict these subjects through structured compositions suffused with a meditative rhythm.
