Phoenix Art Museum to host films and virtual events, Fearless Fashion and The Violet Protest to close in September 2021
PHOENIX (August 19, 2021) – This September, Phoenix Art Museum will present virtual and in-person events with limited capacity, including a First Friday screening of a film inspired by Fearless Fashion: Rudi Gernreich and two screenings of a Great Art on Screen film exploring the life of Frida Kahlo.

LAST CHANCE TO SEE ANN MORTON: THE VIOLET PROTEST | THE 2019 PHOENIX ART MUSEUM ARTISTS’ GRANTS RECIPIENTS EXHIBITION
Closing September 5, 2021, Ann Morton: The Violet Protest showcases the latest collaborative art project by Phoenix-based artist Ann Morton, the recipient of the 2019 Arlene and Morton Scult Artist Award. Titled The Violet Protest, the large-scale installation features more than 10,000 square textile units in equal parts of red and blue materials, symbolizing the union of opposing U.S. political ideologies. These squares were created by more than 1,500 makers from across the United States and parts of Canada. Morton continues to accept submissions up to September 1, 2021 for inclusion in the exhibition. After the exhibition closes on September 5, 2021, the artist will disassemble The Violet Protest and send squares from the installation to all U.S. Senators and Representatives, accompanied by a photo of the full work and a letter calling for elected officials to come together, prioritize the representation of their diverse constituencies, and reject political divisiveness.
Also closing September 5, 2021, The 2019 Phoenix Art Museum Artists’ Grants Recipients Exhibition features works by emerging Arizona-based artists Christina Gednalske, Danielle Hacche, Lena Klett, Nazafarin Lotfi, and Kimberly Lyle. Featured works range from video and photographic works to hard-lined abstractions and drawings, exploring topics such as the body; memory and place; intuition; communication systems and learning; the forces of opposition, tension, and harmony; and much more.

FEARLESS FASHION: RUDI GERNREICH Closing September 26, 2021, Fearless Fashion: Rudi Gernreich presents more than 80 gender-fluid, body-positive designs by ’60s-mod legend Rudi Gernreich, best known for creating the “monokini” topless swimsuit, the thong, unisex clothing, and pantsuits for women. Organized by the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, the major fashion exhibition chronicles Gernreich’s rise to prominence and underscores how his designs revolutionized perceptions of beauty, gender, and identity.

First Friday – Filmed Dance Performance: In this moment September 3 | 3 – 7 pm Free for Members and the public Presented in Whiteman Hall and on the PhxArt YouTube channel This First Friday, catch the premiere of In this moment, a filmed dance performance choreographed by Kleiton Sistelos and inspired by Fearless Fashion: Rudi Gernreich. Visitors can experience the film in person from 3–7 pm in Whiteman Hall at Phoenix Art Museum or online on the Museum’s YouTube channel.

Great Art on Screen: Frida – Viva La Vida September 25 | 2 pm September 29 | 6:30 pm $15 for Members | $18 for the public Presented in Whiteman Hall. Face masks are strongly encouraged. Frida – Viva La Vida explores the life of artist Frida Kahlo, who was at once a revolutionary, pioneering artist and a human being tormented by physical agony and love. Asia Argento narrates this cinematic documentary that weaves together interviews, letters, diaries, and private confessions and features a variety of Kahlo’s paintings, kept in some of the most renowned museums in Mexico. Weekly Virtual Mindfulness Sessions September 2, 9, 16, 30 | Noon Free for Members | $5 suggested donation for the public Scientific studies show the art of mindfulness can relieve anxiety, depression, pain, and stress and actually change the way we feel, think, work, and play by opening new pathways in the brain. Presented in collaboration with Hospice of the Valley, this free, 30-minute, at-home mindfulness session promotes living in the present. This session is hosted on Zoom, a video-conference platform. Virtual Slow Art at Home | Guided Meditation with Phoenix Art Museum September 23 | Noon Free for Members | $5 suggested donation for the public Guided by a Museum educator, this pay-what-you-wish #PhxArtatHome art-based meditation session provides an opportunity to connect with the present moment and create a deeper understanding of a work of art from the Museum’s collection. VIRTUAL SCHOOL AND ADULT TOURS In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and as in-person, on-site tours for schools and the public remain suspended until further notice, Phoenix Art Museum now offers live Virtual Classroom Visits and Virtual Presentations for Adults to bring art-engagement opportunities to the community.
PhxArt Virtual Classroom Visits Led by Museum Docents, the institution’s corps of volunteer educators, PhxArt Virtual Classroom Visits engage students with various art-related topics that complement classroom curriculum. These live virtual art presentations can be presented on a range of video platforms for a fee of $25 per presentation, with free or reduced-cost Virtual Classroom Visits available for Title-I schools. PHXARTIST SPOTLIGHTS Presented by Phoenix Art Museum, PhxArtist Spotlight is a biweekly series that explores what inspires and motivates Valley creatives, while leveraging the Museum’s reach in its community to support and expand awareness of working artists, many of whom have been deeply impacted by the economic effects of COVID-19. Twice a month, the Museum highlights a different artist working in Arizona, posting a Q&A with the artist and images of their work on the Museum’s Instagram and Facebook channels and on the Museum’s bilingual blog.
