Phoenix Art Museum hosts virtual and in-person programs in January; Major fashion exhibition to open February          

PHOENIX (December 27, 2022) – This January, Phoenix Art Museum will host virtual programs and in-person events, including Storytime in the Garden, Creative Saturday, a film screening, and much more. MOVE: The Modern Cut of Geoffrey Beene, the Museum’s newest major fashion-design exhibition, will open in February.

Mr.: You Can Hear the Song of This Town
Through March 12, 2023
Mr.: You Can Hear the Song of this Town at Phoenix Art Museum is the first U.S. solo exhibition in eight years to exclusively showcase the imaginative and visually complex works of contemporary Japanese artist Mr. Influenced by anime and manga, Mr. creates feverish graffiti-inspired paintings and sculptures that explore tragedy, trauma, and fantasy within Japanese society and among a global audience obsessed with social media. The exhibition features a large selection of works by the former protégé of Takashi Murakami, including drawings and paintings created during the height of the pandemic, a recent Museum acquisition, and a new 33-foot-long canvas on view to the public for the first time.

MOVE: The Modern Cut of Geoffrey Beene

MOVE: The Modern Cut of Geoffrey Beene celebrates the dynamic fashions of the late designer renowned for revolutionizing American sportswear and for his trailblazing runway ballets. Featuring garments drawn from the institution’s Geoffrey Beene Archive, the exhibition showcases a wide array of jumpsuits, jackets, dresses, and more, along with materials and ephemera from Beene’s personal archive, on loan from Authentic Brands Group and on view publicly for the first time. MOVE also features video interviews with the muses, models, and collaborators who knew the designer best, bringing to life the brilliance and wit of the American fashion icon.

Storytime in the Garden

Designed for our youngest PhxArt visitors (ages 0-5) and their parents or caregivers, Storytime in the Garden is a wonderful opportunity to share the joy of early literacy, art-inspired play, and hands-on learning with family and friends. The Storytime in the Garden series will be offered on the first Wednesday of each month in the Dorrance Sculpture Garden. Tickets are available for reservation here.

Featured in Demonic, Divine, Human: Japan’s Noh Theater and created by skilled artisans, Noh masks allowed classical Japanese theater all-male acting troupes to express emotion and symbolism through music, dance, and drama. Slow down and let yourself be transported to a faraway land as Master Docent Lisa White spotlights the elaborately carved masks that brought Japan’s Noh theater performances to life. Weekly Virtual Mindfulness Sessions
January 5, 12, 19, 26 | Noon
Free for Members | $5 suggested donation for the general public
Scientific studies show the art of mindfulness can relieve anxiety, depression, pain, and stress and actually change the way we feel, think, work, and play by opening new pathways in the brain. Presented in collaboration with Hospice of the Valley, this free, 30-minute, at-home mindfulness session promotes living in the present. This session is hosted live on Zoom, a video-conference platform. More information available soon at phxart.org.

Creative Saturday

Kick-off the New Year with art-making and performances for the entire family! Check out the exhibition Mr.: You Can Hear the Song of This Town and explore connections to game design with Phoenix-based artist and designer Eric Torres. View Eric’s artwork through an augmented reality (AR) experience created exclusively for Creative Saturday visitors on January 14, 2023. Participate in watercolor drawings with Phoenix-based artist Aileen Martinez, including a drop-in sketchcrawl, and don’t miss live musical performances by students from Harmony Project Phoenix. Lecture and Book Club: Oishinbo Vol. 1

Presented in Singer Hall and the Lemon Art Research Library
Oishinbo Vol. 1 by Tetsu Kariya is the first installment of a multivolume manga series about Japanese cuisine and introduces readers to the fundamental ingredients—rice, sashimi, green tea, and dashi—that constitute the soul of the Japanese kitchen. Each story depicts proper preparation and presentation of different dishes, as well as their history and cultural significance. To complement the Lemon Art Research Library Book Club selection, Dr. Deborah Deacon, who teaches classes in Asian art, anime, and the history of comics at Arizona State University, will give a lecture on the history of manga, from its roots in early Japanese print culture, to its present-day cultural omnipresence. She will also have original hand-painted animation cells from 1980s anime to view. More information available soon at phxart.org.

Film: Portrait of the Queen

Portrait of the Queen offers an original portrayal of the story of Queen Elizabeth II from a totally new perspective—featuring the most intense, amazing, revealing photographic portraits of her, as shared by the extraordinary photographers who accompanied and often created the image of the British monarchy itself. Movement Workshop and Dance Performance

Open to the public during Pay-What-You-Wish-Wednesday
Visitors of all ages and abilities are invited to explore art-inspired movement with artists from the Breaking Ground 2023 Contemporary Dance Festival. Breaking Ground is CONDER/dance’s annual festival presenting dance performance by artists from around the world in Arizona. Come as you are! No prior dance experience required. Following the drop-in workshop, join us at 7pm for the Breaking Ground 2023 preview performances live in the galleries. For more information, click here.
