Phoenix Art Museum premieres new major fashion exhibition in February; to open for special Valentine’s Day hours
PHOENIX (January 24, 2023) – This February, Phoenix Art Museum will host virtual programs and in-person events, including free-access events PhxArt AfterHours and PhxArt Family Funday, a National Theatre Live simulcast screening, and much more. The Museum will also open on Tuesday, February 14, with special hours of operations from noon – 7 pm for Valentine’s Day.
The Museum’s newest major fashion-design exhibition, MOVE: The Modern Cut of Geoffrey Beene, will be on view to the public on February 1. For a full list of exhibitions on view now at Phoenix Art Museum, visit phxart.org/art/exhibitions/.

MOVE: The Modern Cut of Geoffrey Beene celebrates the dynamic fashions of the late designer renowned for revolutionizing American sportswear and for his trailblazing runway ballets. Featuring garments drawn from the institution’s Geoffrey Beene Archive, the exhibition showcases a wide array of jumpsuits, jackets, dresses, and more, along with materials and ephemera from Beene’s personal archive, on loan from Authentic Brands Group and on view publicly for the first time. MOVE also features video interviews with the muses, models, and collaborators who knew the designer best, bringing to life the brilliance and wit of the American fashion icon.

Mr.: You Can Hear the Song of This Town
Through March 12, 2023
Mr.: You Can Hear the Song of this Town is the first U.S. solo exhibition in eight years to exclusively showcase the imaginative and visually complex works of contemporary Japanese artist Mr. Influenced by anime and manga, Mr. creates feverish graffiti-inspired paintings and sculptures that explore tragedy, trauma, and fantasy within Japanese society and among a global audience obsessed with social media. The exhibition features a large selection of works by the former protégé of Takashi Murakami, including a new 33-foot-long canvas on view to the public for the first time.

And Let It Remain So: Women of the African Diaspora
Closing February 12, 2023, And Let It Remain So: Women of the African Diaspora showcases more than 70 portraits, landscapes, self-portraits, and family archival images that explore five photographers’ experiences of the African Diaspora. Featured works illuminate shared and separate understandings of family and history, place and displacement, migration and mobility, and belonging and community, all informed by individual diasporic realities.
And Let it Remain So: Women of the African Diaspora is organized by Phoenix Art Museum and the Center for Creative Photography. It is made possible through the generosity of the Museum’s Circles of Support and Museum Members.

Storytime in the Garden

Designed for our youngest PhxArt visitors (ages 0-5) and their parents or caregivers, Storytime in the Garden is a wonderful opportunity to share the joy of early literacy, art-inspired play, and hands-on learning with family and friends. The Storytime in the Garden series will be offered on the first Wednesday of each month in the Dorrance Sculpture Garden. Tickets are available for reservation here.

Weekly Virtual Mindfulness Sessions

Scientific studies show the art of mindfulness can relieve anxiety, depression, pain, and stress and actually change the way we feel, think, work, and play by opening new pathways in the brain. Presented in collaboration with Hospice of the Valley, this free, 30-minute, at-home mindfulness session promotes living in the present. This session is hosted live on Zoom, a video-conference platform. For more information, click here.
Lecture and Book Club: Convenience Store Woman

Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata offers a bewitching portrayal of contemporary Japan through the eyes of a single woman who fits into the rigidity of its work culture a little too well. To complement the Lemon Art Research Library Book Club selection, librarian Jesse Lopez will give a lecture about some of the unique and interesting Japanese art books and other resources that are part of the Lemon Art Research Library’s collection.
