Discover the surreal landscapes of Philip C. Curtis, who came to Arizona in 1937 to establish the Phoenix Federal Art Center, the first iteration of Phoenix Art Museum. Curtis saw the desert through a lens of magic realism, a departure from the approach of artists such as Maxfield Parrish, Eugene Berman, and other artists who preferred to depict the state’s desert landscapes through more representational modes.
