OBJECT OF THE MONTH
PRESENTED IN MEMORY OF CHERYL FINE

Object of the Month is a series of weekly, 30-minute interactive gallery talks centered on a featured artwork from the Museum’s collection. Designed to spark conversation and deeper connections, each discussion explores the object’s meaning, its place within the broader collection, and the artist’s creative vision. As the Museum’s longest-running and most popular educational program, Object of the Month welcomes more than 4,000 participants each year.

THIS MONTH’S FEATURED OBJECT

Liu Bolin, Hiding in the City #69

Explore Hiding in the City #69 by Chinese performance artist and photographer, Liu Bolin. The artist known in media circles as “the invisible man,” explores the relationship between the individual and society through the act of disappearing into the surrounding environment. Docent Nancy Feiring acts as our guide as we discuss how the art can mirror, critique and challenge social norms.

MEET CHERYL FINE

Generous, gregarious, and always impeccably stylish, Cheryl Fine was the life of every room she entered. She came to Phoenix Art Museum in the early 1990s as a passionate collector and committed herself wholeheartedly to the Museum’s two-year Docent training program.

For more than a decade, she led tours and spoke to community groups across the Valley, delighting in the curiosity and enthusiasm of the schoolchildren she met along the way. She treasured her fellow Docents and the lasting friendships she formed through the program. Cheryl’s style was impeccable yet effortless. She wore couture and ready-to-wear alike with a runway model’s ease, yet she was always unmistakably herself, with a deep, boisterous laugh and a memorable story ready to share with friends old and new.

To ensure that the beauty she so loved could be appreciated and studied by others, Cheryl generously gifted pieces from her collection to the Museum’s fashion department through the Arizona Costume Institute. Her donations included designs by Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Gianfranco Ferré, Tom Ford, and Gucci.
