Artistic circles were fluid, and it was not uncommon for artists to align themselves with several groups. Arthur B. Davies participated in the 1908 exhibition of The Eight, which brought the group of urban realists led by Robert Henri to public notice. Five years later, he was president of the group that organized the Armory Show. His earlier work featured women in classical scenes. For a time after the 1913 exhibition he experimented with modernist styles, as in this small, colorful work. This phase did not last long and he returned to his earlier style.
