The 2016 Artists Grant Awards recipients were selected by a panel of arts professionals organized by Contemporary Forum – Phoenix Art Museum’s support group dedicated to the exhibition and collection of contemporary art. Contemporary Forum Artists Grant awards are given to emerging contemporary artists living in Arizona through an open call process. Awardees are invited to participate in an exhibition of their work at Phoenix Art Museum in the subsequent year of their award.
Mary Meyer, Clay Studies (detail), 2017.
Patricia Sannit uses found and repurposed clay and other materials to explore connections within our shared humanity. As a practicing artist and instructor at Phoenix College since 2001, Sannit has used this protean medium as the basis of a sculptural investigation connecting geologic time, archaeology and history across cultures.
Sannit’s installation Rise Fall Rise is the culmination of a process that began last year in which she began connecting her practice to unfolding political and cultural events. Her process consisted in the making of bulbous head forms containing oblique references to specific events inscribed only through mark making and dating. Fusing the artist’s muscle memory with collective memory, Rise Fall Rise plays with notions of the ‘anti-monument’ and chance to exemplify a collective vulnerability in challenging times

The Arlene and Morton Scult Contemporary Forum Artist Award recognizes a mid-career Arizona artist whose work demonstrates a sustained degree of excellence and commitment. These efforts to recognize and support such artists are made stronger by Mr. and Mrs. Scult, who have made a generous endowment towards the award. The Recipient is chosen by a jury from a competitive pool of candidates who are nominated by current CF members.
The work of the 2016 Contemporary Forum Artist Grants winners will be exhibited in conjunction with Patricia Sannit, the 2016 Arlene and Morton Scult Contemporary Forum Artist Award Recipient, in Anderman and Marley Galleries.
This exhibition is organized by Phoenix Art Museum. It is made possible through the generosity of Contemporary Forum, a support group of Phoenix Art Museum.
