ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Renaissance and Baroque in Perspective

Francesco Solimena, Ecstasy of St. Francis, 1681. Oil on canvas. Museum purchase. Photo: Ken Howie.

Examine how Renaissance and Baroque paintings highlight the development of perspective and the ways artists evolved their techniques to represent three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. Presented together for the first time, featured works reflect a cultural shift—one that transitions from medieval spirituality toward Renaissance inquiry and eventually Baroque theatricality.

Impressionism: Being Present

Pierre Auguste Renoir, Roses and Landscape, not dated. Oil on canvas. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Donald D. Harrington. Photo: Ken Howie

In 19th-century France, paintings became personal records of fleeting emotions experienced in a single moment, and quick, irregular brushstrokes reflected the urgency of a changing society. In this installation, discover how a group of renegade artists transformed painting into a modern lived experience.

Artistic Responses to Modernity

Antoine-Jean Gros, Bacchus and Ariadne, 1820. Oil on canvas. Museum purchase with funds provided by an anonymous donor. Photo: Mike Lundgren.

The 18th and 19th centuries were a transformative period in European art, with daily life reshaped by modernization and industrialization. Featured works signal a shift toward Romanticism, as artists broke away from rigid academic conventions and created idealized portraiture and landscape scenes grounded in naturalistic and expressive representations and often reflecting personal, political, or spiritual meaning.
