FEATURED EVENTS
Teen Zine July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 6:30 – 8:30 pm | Every Wednesday in July. RSVP here.
Teens
of all ages are invited todevelop writing and image content for a zine
of your own, using this as a space to explore a topic in depth, both on the
page and through conversations with peers and featured guest zine creators.
Find inspiration from artists in the museum who have tackled similar themes,
and publish an edition, which will be featured at the next Teen Night. Teens are encouraged to attend all five sessions,
however, they are still welcome to join after the series has started.
Discover the Museum with your baby in tow and give your
brain a morning boost! Caregivers and their littlest ones ages 0-18 months are
invited to join educators for art-inspired conversation designed for curious
adults and our youngest museum visitors. Chatty babies and nursing moms
welcome!
Stroller tours are designed for caregivers with children who
are comfortable in a stroller or front baby carrier for approximately 40
minutes. Advance reservations required as tour size is limited. Included with
General Admission and free for Museum Members.
Family Afternoon Saturday, July 27 | noon – 4 pm Pricing: General Admission plus a $3 materials fee per participant. Free for Members.
Family Workshops are hands-on experiences for children and
adults to explore the Museum together. Our Museum Educators will guide your
family in looking closely in the galleries and making your own work of art to
take home. This workshop is inspired by Abstract Composition by
Carlos Mérida located in the American Gallery.

SOULS Installation Screening Wednesday, July 3 | 10:30 am – 8:30 pm Free for Members, included with General Admission (dir. Malakai / USA 2019 / 15 min / Not Rated / Color / English)
SOULS is a visual exhibition,
photographic art & and film installation that captures the totality of
mortality, blackness and Afro-futurism and will play on a loop in Whiteman Hall
as part of the 2018 Artists’
Grants Recipients exhibition. To make this even better, general
admission at Phoenix Art Museum is Pay-What-You-Wish or voluntary donation
every Wednesday from 3 pm to 9 pm, courtesy of Macy’s, SRP, and Wells Fargo.
National Theatre Live: Hamlet* July 13 | 1 pm July 28 | 1 pm (written by William Shakespeare / dir. Lyndsey Turner / 210 min / Rated PG/ English)
The best of British theatre comes to Phoenix via
broadcast, just in time to celebrate the 10th anniversary of
National Theatre Live. Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC’s Sherlock, Doctor Strange)
plays the title role of Shakespeare’s great tragedy. As a country arms
itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father’s
death but paralyzed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility
of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state.
Tickets are $15 for Members and $18 for the general public.
This price does not include general admission to the Museum.

Carmen is as sensual and
free-spirited as ever as she finds herself caught in a love triangle. The
passionate one act ballet by Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso, originally
conceived for legendary Bolshoi prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, will captivate
audiences alongside Petrushka, a new creation for the Bolshoi by contemporary
choreographer Edward Clug. The double-bill event for cinemas encapsulates and
showcases the soul of Russian Ballet.

Cinema is a simulcast/telecast and not a live performance at the Museum.

Jim Carrey heads the cast of Eternal Sunshine of the
Spotless Mind, directed by Michel Gondry from Academy Award nominee Charlie
Kaufman’s (Adaptation.) original screenplay. The two-time Golden Globe Award
winner is joined in the movie by three-time Academy Award nominee Kate Winslet,
Kirsten Dunst, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Ruffalo, and Elijah Wood. Joel (Jim Carrey)
is stunned to discover that his girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had
her memories of their tumultuous relationship erased. Out of desperation, he
contacts the inventor of the process, Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson), to
have Clementine removed from his own memory. But as Joel’s memories
progressively disappear, he begins to rediscover his love for Clementine. From
deep within the recesses of his brain, Joel attempts to escape the procedure.
As Dr. Mierzwiak and his crew (Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood) chase
him through the maze of his memories, it’s clear that Joel just can’t get
Clementine out of his head.

Each month, join us for a gallery talk led by a Museum
Docent and learn more about an object from the collection or on view in a
special exhibition.
Raymond Jonson’s Cañon de Chelly not only
brings forth the artist’s experience of his adopted Southwest, but also his
continual, progressive foray into abstract forms, his use of musical metaphors
to compose his works, and his desire to use art to transcend the physical to
the spiritual. In it we see evidence of Jonson’s belief that art could be “a
rhythmic whole which moves and calls forth the spirit of each object used.”
Join Docent Gail Paredes-Ewen as we explore the rhythm of the earth and discuss
this artist’s influences and ideas about modern art.

Make It! is a hands-on art-making space for all ages and
abilities. Join Phoenix-based artists and museum staff to be inspired by works
of art from the Museum’s collection or current exhibitions.
Each month features a different object and art-making technique,
and a chance to explore new materials, perspectives, and ways of connecting
with art. July’s monthly theme is “Opposites”! Become inspired by Abstract
Composition by Carlos Mérida located in our American Gallery to create
your own original artwork alongside Phoenix-based artist Mia
B. Adams.
Make It! occurs once each monthand is open to the public
during Pay-What-You-Wish Wednesdays;
Saturday session is free for Members and included in General Admission.
Join us as we use art and guided meditation to connect to
the moment and create a deeper understanding of artworks once per month. Take a
little extra time to look, listen and relax your mind with our teams of museum
educators and mindfulness guides.
Presented in partnership with Hospice of the Valley, each
session focuses on one work of art in the Museum, blending guided mindfulness
practice with a deeper reflection of an individual artwork.

In an effort to reduce economic barriers and increase access
to the arts, Phoenix Art Museum offers Pay-What-You-Wish admission every
Wednesday from 3 to 9 pm.
As the Museum’s first and longest-running community-access
program providing complimentary general admission and programming for all ages
and interests, Pay-What-You-Wish Wednesday has welcomed nearly 1 million people to the Museum
over the past two decades. Complimentary admission for Pay-What-You-Wish
Wednesdays is generously supported by Macy’s, SRP, and Wells Fargo.
Through the generosity of Discount Tire,General admission to Phoenix Art Museum is waived
and admission to the special-engagement exhibition Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist is discounted to $5 from noon–5 pm on the second Sunday of each
month through December 2019, with exciting activities, scavenger
hunts, live performances, tours, and more for all ages.
Julio César Morales: Invaders features work by the 2018 Arlene and Morton Scult Artist Award recipient, Julio César Morales, who is known for exploring the movement of people, narcotics, contraband, and American popular culture across the U.S.-Mexico border. The 2018 Phoenix Art Museum Artists’ Grants Recipients exhibition features works by 2018 artist grants’ recipients Taylor James, Malakai, Elliott Jamal Robbins, and Papay Solomon.
Discover how
flowers have inspired fashions through the ages. Showcases ensembles and
accessories by Marc Jacobs, Comme des Garçons, Charles James, Slava Zaitsev,
and more, the upcoming exhibition explores the evolution of botanical-inspired
designs from the 18th century through the present.
See the first survey of the
recently rediscovered American painter in over 24 years. Agnes Pelton
(1881-1961) painted conventional desert landscapes to make a living, but it was
her abstract studies of earth and light, biomorphic compositions of delicate
veils, shimmering stars, and atmospheric horizon lines, that distinguished her
work.
Mexican
Photographers, Mexican Views features more than 60 works, including portraits
and landscapes, created solely by Mexican artists that explore 20th century
Mexico and the country’s shifting national identity.
The works of art in this gallery explore ways artists relate to and represent the land. From sites in national parks to things one might see in a desert or urban environment, the artists gathered here investigate different kinds of landmarks.
Complementing
the Museum’s special-engagement exhibition Agnes Pelton:
Desert Transcendentalist, Raymond Jonson, Emil Bisttram,
and Stuart Walker’s 14 paintings in Transcendent Transcendentalists, including
12 of Jonson’s paintings never before exhibited in an art museum, explores how
these Transcendentalists guided viewers to higher planes of spirituality
through abstract works.
