Phoenix Art Museum presents new photography exhibition, virtual programs and in-person events scheduled for August 2022
PHOENIX (July 20, 2022) –Phoenix Art Museum has premiered its latest exhibition, And Let It Remain So: Women of the African Diaspora, and this August will host virtual programs and free in-person events including Storytime in the Galleries, a Make It! workshop, Educator Night, and much more. Breaking Up, featuring installation works, paintings, photographs, and more by local and regional artists, will close in August.
CLOSING SOON Breaking Up Closing August 14, 2022, Breaking Up illuminates the many ways in which contemporary artists explore themes of deconstruction and fragmentation through their evolving practices. Paintings, photographs, installations, and digital-media works are drawn from the collection of Phoenix Art Museum, the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation Collection, and various private collections of local and regional artists, including Jessica Paloma, Kristin Bauer, and Beth Ames Swartz.
Breaking Up is organized by Phoenix Art Museum and made possible through the generosity of the Museum’s Circles of Support and Museum Members.
ON VIEW NOW And Let It Remain So: Women of the African Diaspora Through February 12, 2023 Showcasing more than 70 portraits, landscapes, self-portraits, and family archival images, And Let It Remain So: Women of the African Diaspora presents the nuanced perspectives of five photographers who are exploring their experiences of the African Diaspora, defined by the voluntary and forced movement of Africans and their descendants over centuries through waves of migration and enslavement.
Featured works by Widline Cadet, Jasmine Clarke, Hellen Gaudence, Nadiya I. Nacorda, and Sasha Phyars-Burgess reflect specific locales, general memories, and multilayered family experiences, drawing on elements from the past and present to consider an imagined future. Experienced collectively, these dynamic photographs illuminate shared and separate understandings of family and history, place and displacement, migration and mobility, and belonging and community, all informed by individual diasporic realities.
And Let it Remain So: Women of the African Diaspora is organized by Phoenix Art Museum and the Center for Creative Photography. It is made possible through the generosity of the Museum’s Circles of Support and Museum Members.
The exhibition is curated by Aaron Turner, a regular collaborator with the Center for Creative Photography and an African-American photographer and educator based in Arkansas. Turner’s own photography focuses on the Arkansas and Mississippi Deltas and his reflections on the place of the Civil Rights movement within his and his family’s experience. He is an Assistant Professor of Art at University of Arkansas, School of Art, and the Director of the Center for Art as Lived Experience.
Desert Rider Through September 18, 2022 Desert Rider explores the relationships between transportation, industry, landscape, and identity in our desert region. With a diverse display of large-scale installations, prints, sculptures, and more, the major exhibition illuminates the influence of lowrider and custom-car culture on contemporary artists working in the Southwest today, including Cara Romero, Margarita Cabrera, Justin Favela, Liz Cohen, and Douglas Miles, who examine themes of masculinity and femininity, migration and mobility, queer identity, and more.
Desert Rider is organized by Phoenix Art Museum. It is made possible through the generosity of the Arizona Office of Tourism and Men’s Arts Council, with additional support from the Museum’s Circles of Support and Museum Members.
