Phoenix Art Museum to host virtual and indoor events in July 2021, submission period for Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards open through July 15
PHOENIX (June 23, 2021) – This July, Phoenix Art Museum will present a number of virtual and in-person events with limited capacity, including a bilingual art-making event created in partnership with Pachanga Press in downtown Phoenix, various films through a partnership with FilmBar, and a Great Art on Screen production. The submission period for the Museum’s Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards also remains open through July 15. Eligible Arizona-based artists are encouraged to apply through this link from Artlink.

Open Call – Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards DEADLINE JULY 15 $10 submission fee Phoenix Art Museum is now accepting submissions for the Sally and Richard Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards, which replace the former Contemporary Forum and Phoenix Art Museum Artists’ Grants. For the inaugural round of the newly branded Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards, Artlink is hosting the call for artwork submissions. All applications must be submitted online by July 15 with a $10 submission fee that supports education programs and exhibitions at Phoenix Art Museum. Up to three Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards recipients will be announced on September 30, 2021, with each receiving a $1,500 grant and the opportunity to participate in a group exhibition at Phoenix Art Museum in spring 2022. Virtual Make It! with PhxArt and Pachanga Press July 17 | 2 pm $5 for Members | $8 for the public Presented bilingually in English and Spanish. Limited capacity. Registration required. This summer, PhxArt has partnered with Pachanga Press to host virtual, bilingual Make It! sessions that are perfect for art lovers of every age and inspired by the special exhibitions and permanent collection of Phoenix Art Museum. Participants will discover the magic of risograph prints and will receive an edition of 10 prints of the artwork they create during each workshop. During the July 17 session, participants will create a two-toned print inspired by the qilin, a mythical creature with hooves, scales, and a horn. Tickets are available here. Great Art on Screen—Hermitage: The Power of Art July 28 | 6:30 pm $15 for PhxArt Members | $18 for the general public Presented in Whiteman Hall. Limited capacity. Face masks are strongly encouraged. This spectacular documentary explores two and a half centuries of the history of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the building complex with the largest collection of paintings in the world. Viewers will experience the museum’s magnificent interiors, learn about notable acquisitions, explore the complex’s waterfront, statues, canals, and bridges, and more. Not rated. Weekly Virtual Mindfulness Sessions July 1, 8, 15, 29 | Noon Free for Members | $5 suggested donation for the public Scientific studies show the art of mindfulness can relieve anxiety, depression, pain, and stress and actually change the way we feel, think, work, and play by opening new pathways in the brain. Presented in collaboration with Hospice of the Valley, this free, 30-minute, at-home mindfulness session promotes living in the present. This session is hosted on Zoom, a video-conference platform. PhxArt + FilmBar Present: Sunflowers July 7 | 6:30 pm July 10 | 1 pm $12 for PhxArt Members and FilmBar Unlimited-ish Members | $15 for the general public Presented in Whiteman Hall. Limited capacity. Face masks are strongly encouraged. Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers are among the artist’s most iconic works and considered some of the most legendary paintings in the world. Through this film, audiences around the world can now experience the extraordinary exhibition organized by the van Gogh Museum that offered a new and revealing look at the five publicly owned versions of van Gogh’s sunflowers in a vase. PhxArt + FilmBar Present: Intelligent Trees in partnership with Trees Matter July 21 | 6:30 pm $12 for PhxArt Members and FilmBar Unlimited-ish Members | $15 for the general public Presented in Whiteman Hall. Limited capacity. Face masks are strongly encouraged. Trees are so much more than rows of wood waiting to be turned into furniture, buildings, or firewood. They’re more than organisms producing oxygen or purifying the air we breathe. In this unforgettable documentary, Peter Wohlleben (The Hidden Life of Trees) and Dr. Suzanne Simard (The University of British Columbia) explore how trees communicate with and care for each other. Face masks are strongly encouraged. Crysta (Samantha Mathis) is a fairy who lives in FernGully, a rainforest in Australia, and she’s never seen a human before. In fact, she is told they are extinct. But when a logging company ventures near the rainforest, she sees that they do exist, and even accidentally shrinks one of them: a boy named Zak (Jonathan Ward). Now her size, Zak sees the damage that the company does and helps Crysta to stop not only them, but an evil entity named Hexxus (Tim Curry), who feeds off pollution. Rated G. VIRTUAL SCHOOL AND ADULT TOURS In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and as in-person, on-site tours for schools and the public remain suspended until further notice, Phoenix Art Museum now offers live Virtual Classroom Visits and Virtual Presentations for Adults to bring art-engagement opportunities to the community.
PhxArt Virtual Classroom Visits Led by Museum Docents, the institution’s corps of volunteer educators, PhxArt Virtual Classroom Visits engage students with various art-related topics that complement classroom curriculum. These live virtual art presentations can be presented on a range of video platforms for a fee of $25 per presentation, with free or reduced-cost Virtual Classroom Visits available for Title-I schools. PhxArt Virtual Presentations for Adults PhxArt Virtual Presentations for Adults are available for both community-serving institutions and private groups of 10 adults or more. Led by Museum Docents, these live, image-based presentations explore various themes related to the Museum’s collection of more than 20,000 artworks from around the world, creating opportunities for meaningful peer interaction and engagement. PHXARTIST SPOTLIGHTS Presented by Phoenix Art Museum, PhxArtist Spotlight is a biweekly series that explores what inspires and motivates Valley creatives, while leveraging the Museum’s reach in its community to support and expand awareness of working artists, many of whom have been deeply impacted by the economic effects of COVID-19. Twice a month, the Museum highlights a different artist working in Arizona, posting a Q&A with the artist and images of their work on the Museum’s Instagram and Facebook channels and on the Museum’s bilingual blog.
