Phoenix Art Museum to offer discounted admission days for frontline workers, present special Mother’s Day film event and other virtual, outdoor events in May 2021

PHOENIX (April 21, 2021) – This May, Phoenix Art Museum will present a number of virtual and outdoor events to provide socially distanced art-engagement opportunities for the community, including a special screening of Great Art on Screen on Mother’s Day, May 9. The Museum will also offer in May discounted admission days for designated frontline workers and medical first responders in gratitude for the sacrifices they have made to care for our community during the COVID-19 pandemic. As an expression of gratitude for frontline workers and medical first responders who have given so much of themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic to care for our community, Phoenix Art Museum is honored to host PhxArt Frontline Appreciation Days this May. From Wednesday, May 5 through Sunday, May 16, 2021, nurses, hospital personnel, teachers, EMTs, paramedics, and firefighters will each receive one free general admission ticket to the Museum, including admission to the special-engagement exhibition Fearless Fashion: Rudi Gernreich, organized and circulated by the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles. To enjoy their complimentary access, each designated worker must present a work badge, ID, business card, or pay stub at the Museum’s Visitor Services desk upon check-in. This offer is not available online.

Great Art on Screen: Secret Impressionists

This Mother’s Day at Phoenix Art Museum, Great Art on Screen: Secret Impressionists uncovers the story of the art revolution sparked by Impressionism, the artistic movement that produced some of the most beloved artworks in history. The film also unveils 50 previously unseen works by iconic Impressionist masters Manet, Caillebotte, Renoir, Monet, Cézanne, Signac, Sisley, and Morisot. Loaned from some of the most important private collections, these hidden treasures are displayed for the first time in Rome’s Palazzo Bonaparte. Tickets are available here.

Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina) is sold by her mother into the employ of Zampanò (Anthony Quinn), a brutal strongman in a traveling circus. When Zampanò encounters an old rival in highwire artist the Fool (Richard Basehart), his fury is provoked to its breaking point. A poetic fable of love and cruelty, La Strada is the film that launched Masina and her husband, director Federico Fellini, to international stardom. Not rated. Estimated runtime: 1h 48min. Weekly Virtual Mindfulness Sessions

Scientific studies show the art of mindfulness can relieve anxiety, depression, pain, and stress and actually change the way we feel, think, work, and play by opening new pathways in the brain. Presented in collaboration with Hospice of the Valley, this free, 30-minute, at-home mindfulness session promotes living in the present. This session is hosted on Zoom, a video-conference platform. Often referred to as the greatest rock film ever made, the landmark documentary Gimme Shelter follows the Rolling Stones on their notorious 1969 U.S. tour, including when 300,000 members of the Love Generation collided with a few dozen Hells Angels at San Francisco’s Altamont Speedway. Virtual Slow Art at Home | Guided Meditation with Phoenix Art Museum

Guided by a Museum educator, this pay-what-you-wish #PhxArtatHome art-based meditation session provides an opportunity to connect with the present moment and create a deeper understanding of a work of art from the Museum’s collection. Reformed killer Tetsu attempts to go straight, but his efforts are thwarted when his former cohorts call him back to Tokyo to help battle a rival gang. Directed by Seijun Suzuki, this jazzy gangster film is a delirious highlight of the brilliantly excessive Japanese cinema of the 1960s. Not rated. Estimated runtime: 1h 22min. VIRTUAL SCHOOL AND ADULT TOURS
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and as in-person, on-site tours for schools and the public remain suspended until further notice, Phoenix Art Museum now offers live Virtual Classroom Visits and Virtual Presentations for Adults to bring art-engagement opportunities to the community.

PhxArt Virtual Classroom Visits
Led by Museum Docents, the institution’s corps of volunteer educators, PhxArt Virtual Classroom Visits engage students with various art-related topics that complement classroom curriculum. These live virtual art presentations can be presented on a range of video platforms for a fee of $25 per presentation, with free or reduced-cost Virtual Classroom Visits available for Title-I schools. PhxArt Virtual Presentations for Adults
PhxArt Virtual Presentations for Adults are available for both community-serving institutions and private groups of 10 adults or more. Led by Museum Docents, these live, image-based presentations explore various themes related to the Museum’s collection of more than 20,000 artworks from around the world, creating opportunities for meaningful peer interaction and engagement. PHXARTIST SPOTLIGHTS
Presented by Phoenix Art Museum, PhxArtist Spotlight is a biweekly series that explores what inspires and motivates Valley creatives, while leveraging the Museum’s reach in its community to support and expand awareness of working artists, many of whom have been deeply impacted by the economic effects of COVID-19. Twice a month, the Museum highlights a different artist working in Arizona, posting a Q&A with the artist and images of their work on the Museum’s Instagram and Facebook channels and on the Museum’s bilingual blog.
