Phoenix Art Museum offers new family art-making workshop; Barbie®: A Cultural Icon Exhibition to close in early July
PHOENIX (June 14, 2024) – On July 7, fashion exhibitions Barbie®: A Cultural Icon Exhibition and The Power of Pink will close to the public. The Museum will host a Creative Saturday on July 27, presenting the Museum’s first family studio art-making workshop. Together, families will create polaroid portraits. PhxArt will also offer additional discounts on special exhibition tickets during Pay-What-You-Wish Wednesdays for Waymo riders, made possible through the generosity of Waymo. Additional programming includes Object of the Month, art talks, film screenings, and more.
*To receive the discount, Waymo riders must present confirmation of their completed ride at the front desk. The discount will apply to all passengers who ride together.

LEARN // Curator Talk: A Frontline Perspective July 24 | 6:30 – 8 pm Free for Members and the general public Presented in Whiteman Hall. Limited capacity. Join us for a stimulating dialogue as guest curators from the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) and Phoenix Art Museum (PhxArt) discuss their involvement and process in curating Guarding the Art.
Conceived by the BMA, Guarding the Art provided the opportunity for PhxArt frontline staff to draw from their unique insights and perspectives to create an original exhibition, including didactics, interpretation materials, object labels, and an illustrated catalogue. PhxArt followed the model developed by the BMA and presented its own exhibition, Guarding the Art: A Frontline Perspective, to Arizona audiences. Guest curators will discuss the collaborative nature of this curatorial endeavor and reflect on its profound significance, with the conversation moderated by Christian Ramírez, Cohn Assistant Curator of Contemporary and Community Art Initiatives. Participating guest curators include Saul Millan and Juan Jose Oliveros Saldaña from PhxArt and Dereck Mangus from the BMA. For more information, click here.
WORKSHOP // Family Studio: Creative Saturday July 27 | 9:30 am – Noon Free for Members | $45 for the general public | $20 for youth (ages 8-17) Presented in the classroom located in the Admin building. Limited capacity. Advance registration required. Join artist educator Shaunté Glover for a hands-on workshop creating polaroid portraits inspired by exhibition Guarding the Art: A Frontline Perspective. Guided by Glover’s expertise, participants will explore the relationship between people and art, capturing their own meaningful moments through portraiture. Family Studio, offered on select Creative Saturdays, is a collaborative workshop for children ages eight and older and their parents or caregivers Together, families will experience and make art together, as they learn the technical aspects of polaroid portraiture and gain insight into the artistic value of this unique medium. Registration fees include a conversation in the galleries general admission to the Museum, and a hands-on studio-art session. More information available soon at phxart.org.

CLOSING SOON Barbie®: A Cultural Icon Exhibition Closing July 7, 2024 Showcasing the Barbie brand’s 65+ year history and the doll’s global impact on pop culture and fashion through more than 250 vintage dolls, various historical objects, video interviews, and a life-sized Barbie Mirror-Pink Corvette.
Barbie®: A Cultural Icon Exhibition was created by Illusion Projects and curated by costume historian Karan Feder, in collaboration with Mattel. The exhibition’s presentation at Phoenix Art Museum is coordinated by Helen Jean, the Jacquie Dorrance Curator of Fashion Design. NOW OPEN The Collection: American Modern Through November 17, 2024 American Modern broadly explores how artists of the first half of the 20th century, including artists based in the US Southwest and a significant cohort of women artists like Georgia O’Keeffe and Marguerite Zorach, used abstraction and experimentation to spark new perceptions of modernity and novel modes of expression.
