The Collection: 1960 – Now showcases large-scale paintings, sculpture, installations, digital and new media works, assemblages, and more that explore materiality and the modern evolution of self-expression, with a specific focus on artists who have been historically overlooked, including women and artists of color. The installation is organized in thematic groupings that consider how artists across generations expand and unravel the histories of 20th-century art movements such as Constructivism, Abstract Expressionism, Light and Space, Transcendentalism, Pop, Minimalism, and Conceptual art.
Featured artists from the PhxArt Collection include Emily Cheng, Helen Frankenthaler, Jim Hodges, Donald Judd, Louise Nevelson, Fritz Scholder, and Pat Steir, among others. The installation also highlights recent acquisitions including paintings by Zio Ziegler, Cornelius Annor, Deborah Kass, Mokha Laget, and Michi Meko, and a new large-scale mobile sculpture Reflections Between Flashes (2023) by Tuan Andrew Nguyen, recently acquired into the Museum’s collection through the generosity of the Men’s Arts Council.

A special focus gallery spotlights works by leading conceptual artists from Latin America who work with unconventional materials and the language of abstraction to poetically explore the power of loss and memory and the desire to memorialize individuals who have been forgotten. Drawn from the collection of Diane and Bruce Halle, featured artists include Beatriz González, Félix González-Torres, Guillermo Kuitca, Doris Salcedo, and Tunga, among others.
1960 – Now additionally showcases works by Arizona-based artists Beth Ames Swartz, George Thiewes, and more, revealing hidden histories and connections between artists across time and space that reshape art historical narratives.
