Phoenix Art Museum celebrates opening of new local artist exhibitions, virtual programs and in-person events scheduled for September 2022

PHOENIX (August 25, 2022) – This September, Phoenix Art Museum will celebrate the opening of new exhibitions Sama Alshaibi: Generation After Generation and the 2021 Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards and will host virtual programs and free in-person events, including Storytime in the Galleries, Creative Saturday, National Theatre Live, and much more. Desert Rider, featuring large-scale installations, sculptures, prints, and more by Indigenous and Latinx artists, will close in September.

Desert Rider
Closing September 18, Desert Rider explores the relationships between transportation, industry, landscape, and identity in our desert region. With a diverse display of large-scale installations, prints, sculptures, and more, the major exhibition illuminates the influence of lowrider and custom-car culture on contemporary artists working in the Southwest today, including Cara Romero, Margarita Cabrera, Justin Favela, Liz Cohen, and Douglas Miles, who examine themes of masculinity and femininity, migration and mobility, queer identity, and more.

Desert Rider is organized by Phoenix Art Museum. It is made possible through the generosity of the Arizona Office of Tourism and Men’s Arts Council, with additional support from the Museum’s Circles of Support and Museum Members.

And Let It Remain So: Women of the African Diaspora
Through February 12, 2023
Showcasing more than 70 portraits, landscapes, self-portraits, and family archival images, And Let It Remain So: Women of the African Diaspora presents the nuanced perspectives of five photographers who are exploring their experiences of the African Diaspora. Featured works by Widline Cadet, Jasmine Clarke, Hellen Gaudence, Nadiya I. Nacorda, and Sasha Phyars-Burgess reflect specific locales, general memories, and multilayered family experiences, drawing on elements from the past and present to consider an imagined future. Experienced collectively, these dynamic photographs illuminate shared and separate understandings of family and history, place and displacement, migration and mobility, and belonging and community.

And Let it Remain So: Women of the African Diaspora is organized by Phoenix Art Museum and the Center for Creative Photography. It is made possible through the generosity of the Museum’s Circles of Support and Museum Members. The exhibition is curated by Aaron Turner, a regular collaborator with the Center for Creative Photography.

Sama Alshaibi: Generation After Generation and the 2021 Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards Exhibition
September 17, 2022 – May 14, 2023
Featuring works by Arizona-based contemporary artists, Sama Alshaibi: Generation After Generation and the 2021 Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards exhibitions will explore themes of cultural empowerment, multinational identity, and deep introspection. The 2021 Scult Artist Award recipient Sama Alshaibi will present her latest projects of photographic imagery, video, and installation that link themes of dispossession, mobility, ecological entropy, and future and historical imaginings.

The 2021 Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards exhibition will feature works by emerging artists artists Gloria Martinez-Granados, Chris Vena, and Merryn Omotayo Alaka and Sam Frésquez. Gloria Martinez-Granados will showcase prints and other works that serve as a memoir, reflecting on her experience growing up and living as an undocumented immigrant. Chris Vena’s work explore themes of loss, isolation, financial insecurity, and mass death, highlighting the unease of life during the COVID-19 pandemic. Merryn Omotayo Alaka and Sam Frésquez, who are presenting work jointly, work with pop-culture iconography, contemporary trends, and historical references, tracing the evolution of material culture, including hair, jewelry, and textiles.

The 2021 Lehmann Emerging Award Recipients exhibition is organized by Phoenix Art Museum. It is made possible through the generosity of Sally and Richard Lehmann, with additional support from Cattryn Somers and Michael Cafiso.

Every First Friday from 3 – 9 pm, Phoenix Art Museum offers voluntary-donation general admission and reduced rates to view special-engagement exhibitions.

On September 2, Phoenix Art Museum will host a Desert Rider-themed First Friday with various in-person programming, including:

  • Music by DJ Tranzo (@djtranzo)
  • Screening of the short film, The Mystery of Now, and conversation with Desert Rider artist Douglas Miles (@dmiles1_apache), Douglas Miles Jr. (@steezyapache), and the Apache Skate Crew (@instapache1)
  • Live skateboarding demo by Douglas Miles Jr. and The Apache Skate Crew (in collaboration with Cowtown S.K.A.T.E.) (@cowtown_nonprofit)
  • Food and beverage with Palette Restaurant and El Fogón de Joy food truck, Native Coffee Co. (@nativecoffeeco.az), and additional vendors

Free Admission to Desert Rider with Donation on First Friday
PhxArt is proud to collaborate with Native Health for First Friday in September 2022. On September 2, all visitors who attended the Desert Rider-themed evening and donate an item to help serve the Phoenix Kids Snack Bag program will receive complementary admission to the special-engagement exhibition. Requested items include snack sized fruit roll ups, granola bars, bottled water, crackers, rice cakes, veggie straws, fruit and applesauce cups.

Creative Saturday

Celebrate the end of summer with art-making and performances for the entire family. Visitors of all ages and abilities are invited for Desert Rider-inspired tortilla printmaking with artists from Xico Arte y Cultura. Guests can also create their own take-home lowrider shadow box with Kathy Cano-Murillo, The Crafty Chica, and artist Patrick Murillo. Arizona Opera will perform a musical storytime at 12:30 pm and again at 1:30 pm. For more information, click here.

National Theatre Live: Henry V
September 18 | 1 – 4 pm

Presented in Whiteman Hall. Limited capacity.
Fresh to the throne, King Henry V launches England into a bloody war with France. Met with resistance, the inexperienced ruler must prove he is fit to guide a country through war. Kit Harington returns to the stage in an exciting modern production of a classic Shakespeare play, captured live from the Donmar Warehouse in London. Rated R. Estimated runtime: 3 h. Join Phoenix Art Museum for the presentation of the 2021 Arlene and Morton Scult Artist Award and the 2021 Sally and Richard Lehmann Emerging Artist Awards, followed by an artist lecture featuring Sama Alshaibi, the 2021 Scult Award recipient, who will discuss her work and process. Alshaibi’s practice interrogates the social codes found in images, texts, and artifacts to question the construction of history and its impact on a speculative future. Free for Members | $5 suggested donation for the general public
Scientific studies show the art of mindfulness can relieve anxiety, depression, pain, and stress and actually change the way we feel, think, work, and play by opening new pathways in the brain. Presented in collaboration with Hospice of the Valley, this free, 30-minute, at-home mindfulness session promotes living in the present.
