Phoenix Art Museum exhibition featuring local artists to close soon, virtual programs and in-person events scheduled for July 2022

PHOENIX (June 29, 2022) – This July, Phoenix Art Museum will host virtual programs and free in-person events, including Storytime in the Galleries, PhxArt Teen Writers’ Lab, a Make It! workshop, and much more. Breaking Up, featuring installation works, paintings, photographs, and more by local and regional artists, will close in August.

Breaking Up
Closing August 14, 2022, Breaking Up illuminates the many ways in which contemporary artists explore themes of deconstruction and fragmentation through their evolving practices. Paintings, photographs, installations, and digital-media works are drawn from the collection of Phoenix Art Museum, the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation Collection, and various private collections of local and regional artists, including Jessica Paloma, Kristin Bauer, and Beth Ames Swartz.

Breaking Up is organized by Phoenix Art Museum and made possible through the generosity of the Museum’s Circles of Support and Museum Members.

Desert Rider
Through September 18, 2022
Desert Rider explores the relationships between transportation, industry, landscape, and identity in our desert region. With a diverse display of large-scale installations, prints, sculptures, and more, the major exhibition illuminates the influence of lowrider and custom-car culture on contemporary artists working in the Southwest today, including Cara Romero, Margarita Cabrera, Justin Favela, Liz Cohen, and Douglas Miles, who examine themes of masculinity and femininity, migration and mobility, queer identity, and more.

Desert Rider is organized by Phoenix Art Museum. It is made possible through the generosity of the Arizona Office of Tourism and Men’s Arts Council, with additional support from the Museum’s Circles of Support and Museum Members.

Phoenix Public Library Pop-Up

Visitors can connect with our friendly neighbors at Burton Barr Central Library and learn more about the Summer Reading Game. Free activities to enjoy at home with the entire family will be available for pick-up. This program takes place during Pay-What-You-Wish Wednesday. For more information, click here.

PhxArt Teen Writers’ Lab
July 13 | 5:30 – 7 pm
Free for teens (ages 13 – 18)
Limited capacity. Advance registration required.
Valley teens can escape the summer heat and discover how to use original works of art to inspire their writing during this writers’ lab hosted by PhxArt. Participants will connect with Phoenix-based writers in a creative and supportive space while working with new in-gallery writing prompts each week. Tickets are available for reservation here.

Puppet Show by Artist Dain Gore

This July, children of all ages and their families and caregivers can enjoy a live puppet show in the galleries. Phoenix-based artist Dain Q. Gore will present Eggbert Revists Phoenix Art Museum, a performance complete with handmade puppets and extra imaginary adventures. This program takes place during Pay-What-You-Wish Wednesday. Art-Making Workshop: Mixed-Media Lowrider Portraits with Artist
Emily Costello

July 23 | 10:30 am – 4 pm
$20 for Members | $40 for the general public
Limited capacity. Advance registration required.
For visitors ages 16+
Phoenix-based artist Emily Costello will lead an art-making activity inspired by the special-engagement exhibition Desert Rider. Visitors will spend the afternoon in the Education Center Studio experimenting with acrylic paint, stencils, collage medium, and parchment paper to create expressive, mixed-media lowrider portraits rich with texture, meaning, and colorful layers. This workshop is open to all skill levels and abilities. Tickets are available for reservation here.

PhxArt + CALA Alliance Make It! Workshop with Artist Sam Frésquez
July 27 | 4 – 7 pm
Free for Members | Included in general admission for the general public
Visitors have the opportunity to meet artist Sam Frésquez, gather inspiration from her piece on display in Desert Rider, and design their own take-home beaded racing flag. Participants will learn about her process of creating Rainbow Warrior, a functional driving suit covered in glass seed beads, and the car culture that influences her work. This program is open to participants of all ages and abilities. All materials will be provided. Make It! is open to the public during Pay-What-You-Wish Wednesdays. Tickets are available for reservation here.

Storytime in the Galleries

Designed for our youngest PhxArt visitors (ages 0-5) and their parents or caregivers, Storytime in the Galleries is a wonderful opportunity to share the joy of early literacy, art-inspired play, and hands-on learning with family and friends.

The Storytime in the Galleries series will be offered on the first Wednesday of each month. Tickets are available for reservation here.

Weekly Virtual Mindfulness Sessions
July 7, 14, 21, 28 | Noon
Free for Members | $5 suggested donation for the general public
Scientific studies show the art of mindfulness can relieve anxiety, depression, pain, and stress and actually change the way we feel, think, work, and play by opening new pathways in the brain. Presented in collaboration with Hospice of the Valley, this free, 30-minute, at-home mindfulness session promotes living in the present. This session is hosted live on Zoom, a video-conference platform. For more information, click here.
