Phoenix Art Museum hosts Juneteenth celebration; Photography exhibition highlighting environmental concerns closes in June

PHOENIX (May 15, 2025) – In June, Phoenix Art Museum (PhxArt) will host First Friday in collaboration with thems. – aPhoenix-based queer art collective for a pride night celebration. On June 6 from 5 – 8 pm, enjoy free general admission, music performances, in-gallery sketching, and workshops hosted by thems. PhxArt will also host a Juneteenth celebration with programming including an open mic hosted by Rashaad Thomas, performance by Ashton Vaughn Charles, and inspiring local organizations like Lit Twist Bookmobile, Arizona Birthworkers of Color, Made in her Image, and Taste of Melanin.

Photography exhibition Widening the Lens: Photography, Ecology, and the Contemporary Landscape will close to the public on June 15. Additional programming includes film screenings, PhxArt Family Funday, and more.

Celebrate your creativity at First Friday: Pride Night, an evening of interactive art experiences curated by thems. (@thems.phx)—a Phoenix-based queer art collective. Explore art activations throughout the Museum, highlighting the local artists and community programs that thems. hosts throughout the year. Join us for First Friday, featuring free general admission and programming, including:

• Music by DJ J-M Lee (@jmelee) and Robertitx (@robertitx.mp3) 
• In-gallery sketching with Aileene Martinez (@look.see.draw) 
• Enjoy a relaxed drawing lesson with Kyana Mitchell (@paper.finches) while mingling with friends new and old 
• Create one-of-a-kind poems that double as visual art using collage techniques and poetry writing, led by Zane Frederick (@zanefrederickwrites) 
• Get hands-on with printmaking in a joyful, experimental session that mixes Legos and traditional block printing, led by Juan Oliveros Saldaña (@syntheticjuan) 
• Specialty food and beverage experiences with ARTenders, Bonzai Boyz (@bonzaiboysft), and El Fogón de Joy (@elfogondejoy) 
• Docent guided tours at: 5:30 + 6:30 pm (in English) 6 + 7 pm (in Spanish with bilingual Docents)

Step into a world of style, creativity, and self-expression inspired by the exhibition The World of Anna Sui. This month’s Family Funday celebrates the vibrant intersection of fashion and art with a full day of interactive activities, storytelling, and hands-on fun for the whole family, including: 

• Learn the science behind fashion with the Arizona Science Center (@azscience)  
• Explore the patterns of iconic designer Anna Sui and the connection to microscopic worlds of nature 
• Design and create one-of-a-kind accessories to wear and share with § There Space (@there.space), § Esme Carty (@esmeliagrace), and § Ellier English (@ifeelloveandifeelpain)
• Design your own outfit with local fashion designer Angela Johnson, Cofounder of Fabric Incubator (@tshirtballgown)

Widening the Lens: Photography, Ecology, and the Contemporary Landscape offers a compelling view into ecological trauma, our personal and collective relationships to land, and how photography can help us envision paths forward.

Widening the Lens: Photography, Ecology, and the Contemporary Landscape is organized by the Carnegie Museum of Art and curated by Dan Leers, curator of photography, with Keenan Saiz, former Hillman Photography Initiative project curatorial assistant. The exhibition’s presentation at Phoenix Art Museum is coordinated by Emilia Mickevicius, the Norton Family Assistant Curator of Photography at Phoenix Art Museum and the Center for Creative Photography. Widening the Lens: Photography, Ecology, and the Contemporary Landscape is made possible through the generosity of The William Talbott Hillman Foundation, The Henry L. Hillman Foundation, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, The Henry Luce Foundation, The Teiger Foundation, and The National Endowment for the Arts.
