Phoenix Art Museum to launch new community-access programs in 2023

The Museum will end monthly First Friday programming to introduce fully free after-hours and family events that eliminate reduced-cost tickets to special exhibitions

PHOENIX (November 30, 2022) – Effective January 1, 2023, Phoenix Art Museum will conclude its monthly First Friday offerings and launch new free-access events offered at quarterly intervals throughout the year, including PhxArt AfterHours and PhxArt Family Fundays. This new schedule will enable the Museum to offer fully free admission to the entire museum, including special-engagement exhibitions, while also expanding arts-engagement programming and entertainment opportunities. The final First Friday celebration at PhxArt will be on December 2, 2022. Beginning in January, the Museum’s general operating hours on the first Friday of each month will shift to 10 am – 5 pm.

“We are excited to announce these new event-based, free-access initiatives at Phoenix Art Museum,” said Jeremy Mikolajczak, the Museum’s Sybil Harrington Director and CEO. “As we strive to more meaningfully engage our audiences when attentions are split between various events, stimuli, and priorities, we hope this investment in our programming will create greater access to and excitement around art, while ensuring visitors of all ages, abilities, and circumstances can visit the Museum without worrying about the cost of admission.”

Replacing “First Fridays,” PhxArt AfterHours will be hosted on four Fridays throughout 2023. Made possible through the generosity of Partner Sponsor APS, the quarterly event will be offered on a Friday evening from 5 – 9 pm and will feature free admission to every gallery and exhibition, including exhibitions in Steele Gallery and other special-engagement exhibitions. PhxArt AfterHours will also include art-making in the galleries, food and specialty beverages, performances, and other entertainment, creating a celebratory atmosphere similar to the Museum’s largest First Friday events in recent history, including those for the openings of Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic, Teotihuacan: City of Water, City of Fire, Desert Rider, and, most recently, Mr.: You Can Hear the Song of This Town, on view now. The dates for PhxArt AfterHours in 2023 are:

  • February 3 /// featuring the public premiere of MOVE: The Modern Cut of Geoffrey Beene, with the support of Authentic Brands Group, LLC, Arizona Costume Institute, and JPMorgan Chase & Co.
  • April 7 /// with the support of JPMorgan Chase & Co.
  • September 1
  • December 1

A return to an all-ages, free-access day at the Museum, PhxArt Family Fundays will be hosted on four Sundays throughout 2023. Sponsored by Presenting Sponsor Men’s Arts Council, the all-day event from 10 am – 5 pm will feature free admission to the entire Museum, including special-engagement exhibitions. PhxArt Family Fundays will specifically focus on engaging intergenerational audiences, with hands-on and live programming for visitors of all ages and abilities and a “happy hour” in the afternoon for adult visitors. The event will also feature exclusive benefits and experiences for Members. The dates for PhxArt Family Fundays in 2023 are:

  • February 26
  • May 28
  • July 30
  • October 29
