Based in Los Angeles and Yucca Valley, California, Stockman draws from nature and its grammar of symmetry, camouflage, and repetition to create large-scale abstract paintings. Stockman plumbs her familiar landscapes (Los Angeles, the Mojave Desert, a remote island in Maine) for her distinctive palette of glowing, tertiary colors– crackling orange, red earth, Holbein brown, and Fra Angelico blue. The New Yorker art critic Johanna Fateman describes the artist’s biomorphic compositions as “both diagrammatic and vaporous, a combination that calls to mind the spiritualist abstractions of the American modernist Agnes Pelton. Although they’re more lyrical, Stockman’s nested shapes also have the meticulous magic of Josef Albers’s squares.” Tickets are available for reservation here.

These portraits, which address issues of identity, multiculturalism, and personal mythology, are paired alongside historical sculptural objects from the collection of the Birmingham Museum of Art, many of which are on view publicly for the first time. By presenting these works together, the exhibition creates a dialogue about the longstanding, inextricable relationship between art and religion.

Late in her career, Aguilar captured intimate portraits of nude, large-bodied women—including herself—in natural settings to highlight the inherent connections between nature and the female form. She created various series within this framework, and Laura Aguilar: Nudes in Nature brings together these photographs for the very first time.

Fashioned from natural, organic materials, featured works draw influence from Indigenous traditions, Afro-Caribbean religious beliefs, and the traumas of colonial oppression and are placed in conversation with paintings, sculptures and more by a group of 30 multigenerational artists active in the Caribbean and throughout North, South, and Central America. Through this contextual approach, the traveling survey illuminates Elso’s legacy and articulates a more expansive idea of the Americas, free of geopolitical borders and boundaries.

Juan Francisco Elso: Por América is organized by El Museo del Barrio and guest curated by Olga Viso, curator-at-large at Phoenix Art Museum and senior advisor at Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, in collaboration with Susanna V. In this work, Kusama’s repetitive and extensive use of polka dots, mirrors, and LED lights investigates infinite repetition and encourages you to ‘obliterate’ your personality and become one with eternity.

A pioneer of perceptual experiences, Kusama expresses a complex balance between her psychological obsessions and her aesthetic control over them. In the late 1950s, she left Japan for New York City. Her work spans paintings, performances, installations, sculptures, films, fashion, and literary works. They transcended the Pop and Minimalist movements of the twentieth century and reflect the mind-altering spirituality of hippie culture.

The Museum will end monthly First Friday programming to introduce fully free after-hours and family events that eliminate reduced-cost tickets to special exhibitions

PHOENIX (November 30, 2022) – Effective January 1, 2023, Phoenix Art Museum will conclude its monthly First Friday offerings and launch new free-access events offered at quarterly intervals throughout the year, including PhxArt AfterHours and PhxArt Family Fundays. This new schedule will enable the Museum to offer fully free admission to the entire museum, including special-engagement exhibitions, while also expanding arts-engagement programming and entertainment opportunities. The final First Friday celebration at PhxArt will be on December 2, 2022. Beginning in January, the Museum’s general operating hours on the first Friday of each month will shift to 10 am – 5 pm.

“We are excited to announce these new event-based, free-access initiatives at Phoenix Art Museum,” said Jeremy Mikolajczak, the Museum’s Sybil Harrington Director and CEO. “As we strive to more meaningfully engage our audiences when attentions are split between various events, stimuli, and priorities, we hope this investment in our programming will create greater access to and excitement around art, while ensuring visitors of all ages, abilities, and circumstances can visit the Museum without worrying about the cost of admission.”
