Phoenix Art Museum offers free Educator Arts Day and PhxArt Family Funday; The Collection: 1960 – Now to open in August
PHOENIX (July 23, 2024) – On August 11, exhibitions The Collection: Art of Asia and Princely States of the Punjab: Sikh Art and History will close to the public. Modern and contemporary art installation The Collection: 1960 – Now showcasing large-scale paintings, installations, digital and new media works, assemblages, and more that explore materiality and the modern evolution of self-expression, with a specific focus on artists who have been historically overlooked, will open this upcoming month. The Museum will host the next PhxArt Family Funday featuring free admission, live music, art-making workshops, food and drink, and more. Additional programming includes Educator Arts Day, Storytime, film screenings, and more.
FEATURED EVENTS PhxArt Family Funday August 18 | 10 am – 5 pm Complimentary admission | Free-access event PhxArt Family Funday returns, activated by free admission, live music, art-making workshops, and specialty food and drink experiences inspired by newest installation The Collection: 1960-Now, including:
Participate in collaborative art-making installation Painting in Space with artist Nick Rascona (@nickrawsart), inspired by the work of Alexander Calder whose work is on view in The Collection: American Modern
Storytime with Phoenix Public Library (@phoenixpubliclibrary) for early learners
Tour the City of Phoenix Public Library’s bookmobile and learn about available resources
Dynamic dance performances with BlakTinx Dance (@blaktinxdance), where Arizona-based choreographers will present solos, duets, and group pieces blending traditional and modern styles, including folklórico, contemporary, jazz, and African dance
Puppet performance of Hotel Saguaro by The Great Arizona Puppet Theater (@greatazpuppets)
Watch art, music, and spoken word collide with performances by Phonetic Spit (@phoneticspit)
Specialty food and beverage experiences with ARTenders, Mustache Pretzels (@mustachepretzels), and Cones and Shaved Ice (@conesnshavedice)

OPENING SOON The Collection: 1960 – Now August 13 – ongoing The Collection: 1960 – Now showcases large-scale paintings, installations, digital and new media works, assemblages, and more that explore materiality and the modern evolution of self-expression, with a specific focus on artists who have been historically overlooked, including women and artists of color. The installation is organized in thematic groupings that consider how artists across generations expand and unravel the legacies of 20th-century art movements such as Abstract Expressionism, Light and Space, Transcendentalism, Pop, Minimalism, and Conceptual art. Featured artists from the PhxArt Collection include Siah Armajani, Emily Cheng, Helen Frankenthaler, Betsabeé Romero, and Raymond Saunders, among others. The installation also premieres a new site-specific work—Number 411 (2024)—by Leonardo Drew, recently acquired into the Museum’s collection through the Lenhardt Contemporary Art Initiative.
The Collection: 1960 – Now is organized by Phoenix Art Museum and curated by Christian Ramírez, The Cohn Assistant Curator of Contemporary and Community Art Initiatives, Olga Viso, The Selig Family Chief Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs, and Rachel Sadvary Zebro, Associate Curator of Collections. NOW OPEN The Collection: Western Variations Ongoing The colorful grandeur of southwestern landscapes offered endless inspiration to artists who came to the region. Their depictions—captured with a documentary eye and theatrical drama—encouraged exploration and inspired awe. Western Variations highlights key works from the PhxArt Collection that depict iconic southwestern landscapes.

Princely States of the Punjab: Sikh Art and History Closing August 11, 2024 In the 19th century, the Sikh empire flourished in the Punjab region of northwest India. Ruled by locals in alliance with the British Raj, these states and their palatial courts attracted artists, poets, and musicians. This latest exhibition in the Khanuja Family Sikh Heritage Gallery illuminates the regal stature of the period’s Sikh rulers through examples of state portraiture, precious jewelry, and military photography.
