EXHIBITION OPENINGS
Guarding the Art: A Frontline Perspective
January 19 – December 1, 2024
Guarding the Art: A Frontline Perspective features works from the Phoenix Art Museum Collection selected by 13 guest curators from the Museum’s security, event-rentals, and retail-services teams, all of whom regularly engage with artworks and visitors in the galleries. Conceived by the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), and BMA Trustee Amy Elias, Guarding the Art provided the opportunity for these guest curators to draw from their unique insights and perspectives and create an original exhibition, including didactics, interpretation materials, object labels, and an illustrated catalogue. They worked closely with mentoring curator Susana Torruella Leval, Director Emerita and former chief curator of El Museo del Barrio, and PhxArt organizing curator Christian Ramírez, the Cohn Assistant Curator of Contemporary and Community Art Initiatives. They also collaborated with the Museum’s registration and preparation team, marketing and communications, the education and engagement department, and all administrative teams critical to presenting our exhibitions to the community.

Guarding the Art was founded by the Baltimore Museum of Art with generous support from the Pearlstone Family Fund. Guarding the Art: A Frontline Perspective at Phoenix Art Museum is made possible through the generosity of PNC Bank. All exhibitions at Phoenix Art Museum are underwritten by the Phoenix Art Museum Exhibition Excellence Fund, founded by The Opatrny Family Foundation with additional major support provided by Joan Cremin.

Laura Aguilar: Nudes in Nature
Through November 17, 2024
Laura Aguilar: Nudes in Nature presents nearly 60 photographic works that shed light on the groundbreaking career of Laura Aguilar (1959–2018), an artist who explored the intersectionality within her personal identity as a Chicana and a lesbian living in poverty and with depression and learning disabilities. Late in her career, Aguilar captured intimate portraits of nude, large-bodied women—including herself—in natural settings to highlight the inherent connections between nature and the female form.

Laura Aguilar: Nudes in Nature is organized by Phoenix Art Museum and the Center for Creative Photography. It is co-curated by Sybil Venegas and Christopher Velasco, trustees of the Laura Aguilar Estate. The exhibition’s presentation at Phoenix Art Museum is coordinated by Emilia Mickevicius, the Norton Family Assistant Curator of Photography at Phoenix Art Museum and the Center for Creative Photography. All exhibitions at Phoenix Art Museum are underwritten by the Phoenix Art Museum Exhibition Excellence Fund, founded by The Opatrny Family Foundation with additional significant support provided by Joan Cremin.
